15,000 mile oil. fact or fiction?

I've used mobile 1 in my car since i bought it, and as you guys have seen its been sitting for a bit and im almost done working on it... ( paint prep is done, and pirmer going on this weekend. will post pics asap)... i am going to change the oil and seafoam it before i start driving it again. so is this 15,000 mile mobile 1 for real? anyone used it? im scared to drive a car for 15,000 miles without changing the oil. what do you guys think?

i dont see how it would, dealerships reccomend 5-7k on a change, i work at an oil change place and see the havoc of people coming in after going that long on conventional oil, hell i wouldnt reccomend 7k on synthetic, there's countless examples of people listening to the dealerships 5-7k, then going alittle over (everyone goes a little over) and seeing the inside of their engines is gross, all sludge, DARKNESS IS SPREADING.... ok thats it

The mobil1 7,500 mile oil is a blend or not full synth. We have used mobil 1 in the wifes car since new, and when I went to get some more oil to change her oil I noticed something. The 7,500 was a blend and looked over and noticed 2 diff. types of full synth. the reg. mobil 1 and an extended performance mobil 1. The extended was good for 1yr or 10,000 miles+.

As stated above the issue is with the filter, you will have to change the filter still every 3-4ish thousand miles or so.

FWIW, I know wal-mart is the debil but they have an unbeatable price on mobil 1 syn. its like 19.95 for 5qrts and the extended mobil 1 full syn. is like 24.95 for 5qrts. thats a great price. Thats 3.99 a qrt for mobil 1 syn. and 4.99 for the extended oil. Most places want around 5.30+ a qrt.

yeah thats where i was looking at oil.... yeah the new mobil 1 line has conventional rated at 5000miles, synth blend at 7500 and pure syn at 15000 mile.... its only 4$ more for 5 quarts of the 15000 over regular mobile 1 synth.... firgured i might try it but like i said 15000 miles is alot an its scary to leave oil in for that long.

15,000 that is it, I couldnt remember (even with it in your thread title ). As long as you change that filter out I dont see how it could be too bad, synt. is not like reg. oil in that aspect. I still change out my reg. mobil 1 syn. in the mustang every 3-4 months or 3-4k miles.

For the daily drivers though its nice to have that extra time/mileage for when they go over.

Yeah I agree. I hate walmart and hate going their but their price on the 5 qt jug of mobil 1 is cheap. I would not leave the oil in for 15k miles, that to me is insane. I think i'm gonna splurge and get the mobil 1 extended oil for an extra $5 over the regular mobil 1. I wonder if its a gimmick? They say its got more additives than the regular mobil 1. I'm just waiting til I have about 500 miles on my engine. I wonder if the mobil 1 oil filter is worth it over the motorcraft FL 1?

The filter is the key, I have always used the fl 1 motorcraft filter and heard great things about them and the company who makes it for ford.

I have not seen any real tests on the mobil 1 or K&N filters. I was actually reading on a local mustang site about this very topic. Someone posted something along the lines "well unlike the K&N air filters you dont get to re-use it for the extra cost".

I would not leave oil in that long either (esp. in the mustang) but say on that 15,000mile oil you went 10,000 miles a handfull of times over the life of the car (daily drivers here) and only got around to changing the filter (should be done no matter what at 3-4k miles). I would feel better about having that 15,000 mile oil in there.

Well, I can't answer your question, but I will add in a factor..... driving habits. I change my oil & filter every 3,000 miles... and I use M1 Syn. However, on my gov. car, I get it changed every 7,500 miles, as I do long distance trips in it (nothing but highway miles). Some trips are 300 miles. Never any problems. My last car had 79,000 on it when I traded it in..... and it ran like new. This is regular oil & filters. For daily stop & go driving, I wouldn't recommend doing this.....


For my Stang.... regardless of driving style or type of oil, she gets it every 3K.

I will never leave oil in my car that long... I drive hard (always have) and my oil always shows it. So I figure that I need to change it every 3k miles and that is why I use conventional oil.

I tried synthetic (Mobil1) in my last truck when it had only 24k miles on it. I changed the filter at 27k miles, then at 30k miles I changed it all and sent a sample to blackstone labs. The report basically came back that my oil was done. It registered a whole lot of top end wear. Did the same test with conventional with 3k on the oil at around 45k and it came back much better...

Just some food for thought...

Now I buy Napa gold fiters as they seem to be some of the best out there (and only $5)... who makes the ford filter? better not be fram...

I use the NAPA ones as well, Ive heard they are very good. Also use Mobil 1 Synth and change it every 3,000 although I am a little over now.

I just picked up a mobil 1 oil filter. It was on sale for $8. I'm going to hit up walmart tonight *sigh* to pick up a 5 quart jug of mobil 1 just to have ready for when I switch to synthetic. Still debating whether to get the regular mobil 1 or the extended performance. Regardless i'll be changing the oil at least twice a year. Its not a daily driver.

The world was brainwashed by oil companies back in the day that said oil was only good for 3000 miles(just greedy). Now that oil is becoming scarce, they have to slowly let it settle in that oil can go a lot longer than the original expectations set by such companies.

15k seems a little rediculous, but possible. The filter has no chance of making this mark as stated above. I have seen Rigs go for 300+k on 1 oil change. They do take a ***** ton of oil, but they also work pretty hard and run almost non-stop.

There is a ton of information about this kind of thing on the Amsoil website. Take a look if you have time. You will see a lot of answers to questions about oil and how long it lasts.

I do a 2500k interval, sometimes less only because I don't drive that far in a 6 month period. But my oil is crystal clear everytime, and I don't drive nice when I do drive my car. Wasn't built for NICE.
