I usually hang out at the 5.0 tech area, but thought someone here might know some info.

I just scrounged a 68 Mustang 302 four barrel motor, less intake. I know the previous owner of the yard, and have been looking at it for 2 years. It was complete when he pulled it. He sold the intake I guess.

I got it mostly to have another block to build.

Is there anything special or different about this engine, like the heads, etc?

Basically the heads and the intake are the 2 unique items that would be worth something.

I believe the heads have a 4v cast by the rockers. Heads are small cc 52-54.

Other than that it is a thick wall cast block which should withstand more abuse than the thin wall roller blocks.

The "J" code 302 4V heads were not the best performance choice, mainly because this was a smog pump engine. To check if you actually have a 68 4V motor, look and see if each cyl. has a threaded hole for a smog line fitting. The '68 302 4V was the only engine in non Calif. cars to get a smog pump. The good news is, that since these were so bad for performance they usually got tossed, so there are a lot of 68 Shelby GT350's running around with different heads, and now Shelby owners are looking for these heads and smog pumps. (the smog lines are being reproduced) So there is a market for the heads.

Thanks.

I thought the threaded holes for the air injection were in the exhaust manifolds, not the heads. I did not get the exhaust manifolds. I got a rusty left side long tube header and nothing on the right. I will check for numbers, etc, tonight.

Looked it over a bit closer and pulled a valve cover. It has 4V and 302 cast into the top of the heads. No Thermactor holes. According to my book, these should be the 54 cc chamber heads.

The Block is a C80E. Judging from the head gaskets, it may have been rebuilt. It turns freely, the little bit I tried.

I got it for the block, and hope it's usable. Don't need these heads at the moment. I may try to use the front cover and wp pulley since they are std rotation.

Thanks for the info.
