Stop already. It's not two weeks,....It's 3 days.

I now have Sunday the 10th (1). Wed the 13th (2), and Sunday the 17th (3). The next day I have off after that will be the Friday I pick Dave up from the airport.

The hood?......We aren't talkin' about that right now.

The Garage?..... It's getting there.

Will I be ready for "D" day? Come hell or high water.

All I'll say is that I'm working on it.

I hate that f'kn hood. I hate that f'kn hood. I hate that f'kn hood.

On Sunday, I ran out of filler. Today, I went to AZ and bought some Bondo. I bought the "premium" gold junk. The label says "tack free". After smearing on one small wipe,..it was still tacky one hour later.

I took that junk back to AZ. Dude asks if I'm returning it "unused".

"Nope, I used it, It's crap". AZ dude asks for clarifiction.

"Says here "tack free formula",.....It was still tacky after one hour. I haven't got all day." Dude refunds my money.

I go to the Auto body supply shop in Bessemer. (Not where I usually go,.....They sell "off brand stuff" at this place,...Matrix brand paint, and a plethora of other stuff you've never heard of.) I ask the shop owner if he has some decent filler that's tack free. He does,..... says it's the sht. 18.00 a gal.

I buy it.

When you buy filler there are always two selling features to look for.

One is that it's tack free.

The other is that it's easy to sand.

Typically when you buy a gallon of that stuff that's both,......it costs around 50-60.00 a gallon.

When you spend 18 bucks,....you get a tack free product that sands like concrete.

In the 95 degree heat.
In 80% humidity.

I stopped at 6 pm. Smelling like the rarest of Himalayan Mountain Goats.

Took a shower......

Went out,.......

And drank.

I'm back now.

The hood is.......We're still not talking about it.

Are we talking about the top side or bottom side of that goat? I feel like there is a difference.

I did not say there was progress,......but that doesn't mean that there isn't.

There is now exactly three days left before D day including today. In those three days I have to finish the complete body work, clean the garage, and turn it into something that it's currently not. Despite the fact that there are only those three days left doesn't change the fact that the 22nd is gonna come, so I'll be doing what it takes to get where I need to be even if it means some long nights as it gets down to the wee hours.

Today's progress will hopefully break my drudgery cycle, and I'll be able to post pics of dancing bannanas later, instead of the little blue dude that shakes his head.

Mike, forgive me for asking again. I know you work 6 days a week, but what are your daily work hours? Didn't you say you are limited to 40 hrs/ week??

Yup. There's no way in hell you can claim 3 days left with all those hours in the day still. Man I get up at 5:30 in the morning to go to work, and I'll stay in the shop until 10:00 pm If I have a crunch on a project going. Remember my boy's car?

Hey,...I'm not stressing yet. (I know I have "extra" hours in the day left)

The reality of the situation is this:

The rules of mike's life w/ regard to co-existing w/ Kate.

I'm "allowed" one day in the garage. Sunday was supposed to be garage off-limits,.... restricted to family only duty.

But then the "Needs of the Monster outweighed the needs of the few,.....or the one" (a cookie to the guy that gets the reference quote)

She agree'd to let me have both days until I get the thing ready for paint in light of the looming deadline.

Typically, when I get home each night, there's time for dinner, talk, and TV .

Do you think I'd have a prayer saying "Hey uhh,.....how bout we just skip that tonight while I go down and work on the Monster?".....

I've been married 30.5 years,......I'd like it to go a little longer.

I'd be different if i worked where I'm not that concerned about being clean, I could spend a hour or so in the morning but, but my fingernails have to be "manicured clean" everyday. I reach out and point to buttons and features all day long. A normal day in the garage leaves me w/ grease, paint, bondo, and various funk that takes a little while to get rid of.....

Star Trek reference. Quote from Spock.

The rest?

There are 15 hours between the time you get off work, and the time you have to report back. You can stay up until midnight, still get 8 hrs sleep with an hour to dress and get to work. If you can't satisfy that lady and still get in a few hours of work between 6pm and midnight, there are only a few conclusions to be drawn from that... and none are good. Just sayin.

Hmmm....

Your figures are a little......skewed.

You forgot to add the aging multiplier.

With the exception of Dave....(who I firmly believe to be a Cyborg) ages past 50 get to take age mulligans.
Age mulligans take into account injuries, arthritis, aches, pains, and endurance for the task at hand.

Age Mulligans directly impact remaining hours in the day by a factor of .5 hrs multiplied by each year past 50.

I'm 58. Age mulligan math equates to 4. Subtracting that from your figure leaves 11 hours.

You do not get to take age mulligans yet.

You also did not take into account the Monotony/diffulculty of the tasks one might hope to impact in the remaining 11 hours.

Body work , and the requisite sanding that comes with it is only eclipsed by digging trenches when given a score on the M/D multiplier. Bodywork gets an 8. Trenches get a 10.

The M/D scale multiplier against remaining time is .25 hr per number. 8 x .25 = 2.

That leaves 9 hours.

It takes me an hour each morning to get up, get around, eat, iron clothes, shower and drive 20 minutes to get to work.

That leaves 8.

I sleep during that time.

The rest of the story:

Well, here it is, 11 days from D day, and I'm still working the hood. I didn't realize until yesterday that those two scoops are the problem, and not the way I mounted/welded them on.
All this time, (and it's been a really, really long time now) I've been thinking that welding them on was the problem. The heat distortion causing unwanted warpage, but after yesterday know that that's not the case.

This new hood started out straight. After cutting the two holes where the scoops go, and creating a recessed flange for them to sit it, the hood still remained straight. Welding them on stuff changed.

The hood takes on a crown at the back of the scoops which causes two low spots at the rear corners, Those two low spots affect the straightness of the center rib. The front two corners do a similar thing,
only they create a high bulge, and that comes with a companion low spot on each corner as well.

Exactly the same thing that was happening on the other hood.

Couple that, to the flimsy nature of the hood skin, and maybe you can get an idea of why it has taken me days,.......no, scratch that....weeks of messing with it to try and get it straight.

Here's the irony.

I got the other version of the hood close enough to call "prime-able" and did just that. I posted a pic of it, and Dave pointed out what he could see from the pics. It was also at that juncture that I used only reducer (having neglected to add hardener to the primer) that forced me to strip it off. When I did that, I second guessed myself, and decided to fix the hood "better", and try to address what the painter saw in the pics.

The new version is close to being ready for primer. The same issues exist. I'm quite confident that when I prime this thing, and post the pics, Dave will say the same stuff......one month, a new hood, and 40 hours of sweat later.
