Now it’s a matter of waiting a half hour, and another engine run up to temp, As much as I talked about leaks, and my attempts to fix them, I decided to fix the one that i’ve had since day 1 at the tail shaft to slip yoke seal. It had always been seeping out at the metal to metal area where the seal slid into. I simply pried the metal lip off the trans enough to create a small gap, then filled that gap with rtv. That is what i’m waiting on to dry.

Once i give it a few more minutes, I’ll lower the tail of the car down to level the car out. ( I had it tipped way nose down so that the trans fluid would run back out of the tail shaft housing)
Once done, I’ll start it, run it up to a operating temp and rev it while data logging and watching the AFR.

Then, i’m gonna shut it off, and unplug the VVT solenoid, and rev it again. Stands to reason, if the VVT solenoid is contributing to this engine vibration, disconnecting it so it can’t advance the cam would be the test to see.

Time to go see.

I cant even believe I'm writing this.
Went to start it..theres something hitting something in the bell housing,...like one of the bolts holding the front pump on has backed out..if you rev the engine, the interference noise gets worse, so definitely the converter is hitting a bolt head.

That forces me to remove the converter bolts to make sure that it is what I think it is, and sure enough, the converter will barely back away from the flexplate. I started it nonetheless just to be sure...

This is for those that might think I just make this sht up..

Guess what else else isnt happening?
@HotFox ..knows.....You can guess cant you?

The engine revs like a sewing machine..

Im done with this trans....Clearly the vibration I was talking about yesterday managed to loosen one of the bolts that was so freakin tight that I was afraid I'd strip them if I pulled it any tighter..and now one has backed out and started making contact with the converter.

I'm not gonna fck with it. I'm gonna go upstairs, pull out the CC, and order the sht to convert the thing over to some GM trans. I need to determine if I can live with a t400 3 speed, or if a 4l60e can live, or if i need to go straight to that heavy pig 4l80.

I'm calling people right now.

Oh yeah..almost forgot..
The fcking exhaust cam seal leaks..

Throws oil everywhere..

It's a wonder I dont shoot this car, or myself dead

Sorry to hear about that Mike. Remember, take a deep breaths and drink lots of liquor.

Well, that usually helps me. I never make good decisions when I'm steamed.

Sorry to hear Mike. On a lighter note, bet you wished you had the plasma torch now. It would make removing the transmission a heck of a lot more fun

My vote, for what it's worth, is still a built 4L60E. You save the weight over the 4L80E, still have overdrive unlike with the TH400, and it'll be an easier fit. The problem is finding a builder that's not full of when they call their transmission "built".

At least you have that handy dandy transmission jack adapter thingy now, so popping that boat anchor out shouldn't be an issue at this point!

Well....let’s add up today’s purchases:
1. Billet aluminum 4l80e transmission adapter kit: 799.00

* Be here monday.
1. Transgo 4l80e-3 transmission valve body reprogramming kit to allow full manual control of all 4 forward gears, with the same push button converter lock up capability, and the TCI 4 speed gate plate to allow me to convert my 3 speed shifter to a 4 speed shifter.

I don’t have any idea why i’ll need the zip ties,..but they’re included. 330.00
* be here monday.
1. A10” 3000-3300 stall lock up converter. OMG! The converter is the killer here..820.00 from the same place that built the other thing for me... When they’ll get it to me is an unknown, other than he said he’d get me taken care of. Nobody else can even get one made due to the Virus that won’t be done before late September.

Still left to buy will be the trans,...hopefully my guy will come through for me, otherwise it looks like a 500.00 rebuildable piece will have to be sourced. Then the overhaul kit which‘ll add 300.00 more to the tally. If my guy comes through, he said he could get me one for about 150.00..that’ll put me into a fresh trans for 500-800.00.

Lastly, there’ll be the driveshaft...And...getting it to fit. So...what did I just spend?

$2600-2800...should put a transmission in the car that’ll handle anything I throw at it. Waiting on the trans will give me time to cool out...and pull the front of the engine back off for the sake of a freakin leaking oil seal. I’m mega pissed that I’m having to do this, more than pulling that trans out for the 4th time.

You can buy the trans pan for dramatically less than i paid. Either you or @a91what Steve can have this thing for cheap, and the bonafide Mike matko edition manual valve body with push button 4th and L/U capability...

When I got home, I was going to ask, THEN WHAT HAPPENED?

I'm not sure what has now transpired, other than you spent a load of money. Think I'll go back to Heber Springs and help my brother get the mobile home habitable so we can drink beer and drive his boat up and down Greer's Ferry lake and not worry about like this.

But my drunk shopping takes over and if a young dude over there is not a bull ter, I will own a 2000 LS T56 for $800 tomorrow. Must need meth money.

Its okay Mike. The low Shores A hardness of the seals is Toyota's way of avoiding Cosworth BDA style bearing support failures.

The problem is its a "Johny Five lets Disassemble". Been there. Done that with my wife's 3SGE.

Copy Bob Pham

View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?edufilter=NULL&v=WFRq00HZCAE

Without further addoo, count the seal and service tools needed. These Toyota engines are epic examples of the triumph of engineering...over common sense .

14 additional service tools to do all seals. 21 special service tools in total.

The Jay Sixes are similar to the 3S and Y series OHC/OHV fours, made on the same transfer lines, BUT the wid angled cammers are much more difficult than the narrow angled DOHC fours. As they upgraded the spec, Toyota added Fruit, Forged steel, and bolts, baby.

For that harmonic balancer pulley. My beloved thin 3/16 steel plate.

And the water pump stupid bolt, you've got it sussed already.

The AOD or Ford AODE or 4R70W automatic is just an FMX without a detachable front bellhousing, and the whole thing flexes due to ...dare I say it. Power Spectral Density variances. Like the sands through the Bay during a San Andrea's big bump.

Go GM. And kick some ass, Sir.

Grey RTV or Honda bond on the bolt . Sounds like they didn’t press the little ball into the cam to seal it .
My buddy had the same issue with one of the GSCs on his .

*Ahem*

Despite the virus, Kate and I still venture out.

We occasionally go out to dinner,..we “sometimes“ frequent the bar we “regularly“ haunted...
Tonight was that night.

She says to me “ You seem rather low key” tonight,..did everything go as planned in the garage?”.
”Nope,..gotta replace everything behind the engine...The transmission is vibrating itself apart”.
” Sounds bad,.... You seem rather resolved considering the work you’ve put in...”
” Nope,...I’ve surrendered...I’m tired of fighting the cheap fight...I’ve taken out a second mortgage on the house to pay for it..I don’t care what it takes to fix it now,...I’m buyin the right sht.”
” I’m not buyin any of that sht“ Kate says...I say “ No, you’re not...me an Zero percent for 15 months Visa are”..
There was the lull in the conversation that typically comes when she realizes that i’m gonna spend thousands of dollars on the car that has competed for my attention between her, the house, our lives, the grown kids .....you name it.....

But just as soon as it sinks in that I’m taking nothing away from any of that..( except maybe time spent with her)...she cools.

Now she knows nothing about the 3000.00 that’ll show up on my personal CC statement.. but that’s the way we’ve lived our lives for the last 20 years of the 35 we’ve been together...What‘s her‘s is her‘s, what’s mine is mine, and what’s our’s is our’s..

So,....basking in the knowledge that i’m doing the right thing.....I’m dumping money into the car..Some of you will consider 3k for a fresh full manual transmission, shifter, controller, and converter as a bargain....And maybe it is....I know that after spending 6 months trying to get something to fit that was never gonna fit....3 k is a bitch slap upside the head...reminding me that this thing coulda been running before there ever was such a thing as a Corona Virus.

When you pull the bolt out To pull the gear to change the seal , make sure the cam isn’t just hallow to the inside of itself .
