I have been borrowing my Grandpa's for the past few weeks while I wait for parts for my truck to come in. It's a fun little car, and I really like it.
However, there is an issue with the idle. Originally, when I first began to drive it, the car would start up normally for the first crank of the day. The second start, the idle would go up between 2 and 3000 RPM and there was nothing that would solve it while I was in the vehicle. Feathering the gas pedal, dropping it into gear, etc. Then on the third crank, the idle would be so low that the vehicle would stall every time I came to a stop.
I looked around in the shop manual for a while. I decided to take apart the Idle air bypass on the throttle body. It had been clogged with some carbon, so I cleaned it out. I Cleaned out the throttle body as well.
After I bolted everything back up I started it. The first start, the engine started and idled perfectly. The RPMs started a bit fast, but slowed down to the correct idle just like the EEC is programmed to run it. Everything was great until I went to start it the second time....
Now, on EVERY SINGLE START (doesn't matter weather it's hot or cold), It cranks, idles rough for about three seconds, and stalls out. The only way to get it to stay running is to hold the throttle and let the engine run at 2000 + rpm for about 10 seconds. Once you start driving it, the idle is perfect. It runs good and doesn't stall anymore, but once you start it off, it's tough to get it started. Since I found the Idle air bypass valve is working properly, I was just curious if anyone would know what might be causing this sort of problem.
