Hello all. New guy here with, hopefully, a small build thread starting soon.
I'm currently working a deal on a 1992 LX 'vert. Low miles, known history, service records, etc. Currently all stock except for an H-pipe, plug wires and a CD player. I've long been a fan of the Foxbody, and even owned a GT many, many years ago.
I'm looking for something to replace my Jeep YJ. A true 4 seater, true convertible (with the Jeep, the top is usually either on or off....and off all Summer), and something a little more highway/road trip friendly.

Think of it as sort of a "Gentleman's Express". Any mods will be bolt on. I don't plan on getting into the engine (heads, intake or cam). I'll see how it sounds with the H-pipe, but maybe some cat-backs some day? I plan on a thorough tune up, SFC's if they're not already there, strut tower brace, etc. I'll upgrade pads/shoes and brake lines along the way. Probably a short shifter. And, maybe ....maybe .... some 3.55 gears. I do want this thing to be highway friendly for longer road trips.
I'm all ears and welcome any advice about making the car more fun, reliable and enjoyable.

The car is 6 hours away from me now, so everything has been done over the phone or virtually so far. I am planning a trip to look at it in person next month. One thing I now it will need is a new top. Suggestions on the best fitting/quality top?

Here are some teaser pics until I can see it in person.

Luv'd my '93 'vert! I bought it cheap, specifically for the drivetrain to use in another project but the car ran so good I drove the crap outta it for 3 years! Every weekend I'd drop the top and the wife and I would take day cruises all over. Finally, I pulled the motor/trans and swapped 'em into my '54. It had the AOD and with 3.27 gears and I'd cruise at 80 all day long. Very dependable car! If you're going on longer road trips you may want to upgrade the front seats to Recaro's or something similar. The factory buckets aren't that comfortable.

I also had an '89 'vert. Kinda looks just like yours! It was a turbo'd 4 cyl beast. Built motor, T5, 4 wheel disc brakes. Drove that for 4 years until some clown rearended me and totaled it!

No, it will not be my daily driver, though I will probably drive it daily during the Spring and Summer.

I was into vintage motorcycles for years and I sold most of the collection and bought a Jeep YJ, so the wife and dogs could join me. The Jeep is fun as heck, but it's not a true convertible. The top stays off all Summer.
I also have a '63 Bug that I've owned for almost 30 years.

Looks nice! Good luck with it. I love my 87 convertible.

My top needs replaced also. I was wondering the same thing. For sure I want a glass rear window, maybe a cloth top and not vinyl? Not sure though. I haven't researched it much yet.

Tell me what you think it's worth? He's the 2nd owner and bought it from his friend. 120K miles, serviced, with records. Nice body and interior. Needs a top.

I've been looking for a few months and I know what I see on the East Coast, near me.....FB Marketplace, eBay, AutoTrader, some FB groups, etc. I think he's being very reasonable.

OUCH! That sucks.
How do you think the 5 speed would be on long highway trips with 3.55 gears?
You wouldn't still have those wheels, would you?

Thunderstang had the T5 with 3.55's and it would cruise 75-80 mph at 2K with no issues. We would routinely take it on 200-300 drives, with the top down, of course!
The wheels are long gone, sorry. The insurance company let me keep the car and I sold most of the usable parts for $4K. I pulled the motor/trans and transplanted them into my roadster. Thunderstang lives on!

Damn the bad luck on the red one evintho
At least you still got the roadster (nice)
Scott buy the red vert with the 5,0
You can't go wrong
Call the library ask for the reference desk
Ask the librarian what the car is worth
They have NADA books and used car buyers guides and can tell you
That way you can make the guy a reasonable offer without offending him or being a jerk (me)
Do offer less than what you think its worth
The guy wants to sell it

It would be easier if you just listed the price. Red interior would be a hard sell for me. I looked at alot of junk in the 4k range 7yrs ago when I finally found one in MO for 6k. Lotta' my buddies thought I was crazy paying that for a vert'. But, completely rust free and only had 92k.

Scott,
You sure will be able to replace the top for less but tell the owner it'll cost you 2,500 for a new convertible top and offer him 4,000
Take 5,000 with you in case he starts groaning or acting sick

At a young and naive age, when I was very sweet I was looking at a BB 69 Chevelle to buy.. Took it by this older guy mechanic to look at it and when he saw the red interior ( and I will NEVER forget this) he told me "red interior is like sitting on some womens old used rag"...... didn't buy the car and have NEVER had a red interior car to this day and never will...........

I like my red interior. The important thing with the red is it has to be like new. Which mine is.

The red interior doesn't bother me one bit. I'd rather have that over white leather.

I think he's in a very fair price range, even taking into account the top. And $2500 to replace? I'm getting quotes for $1000-1500, including the top. And, yes, from reputable shops in my area.

I've been looking at the Foxbody's for a while now and I know what's available in my area and what they're asking/selling for. I'm comfortable with where we're starting.

I said tell the owner it'll cost 2500
You do not want a fair price
You want a deal
That is not the only Mustang for sale you mention to the owner
If he finds out you gotta have it... well, you are screwed
My advice is bitch and moan about the red even if you love it

bitch and moan about something I'm selling and I (sometimes) politely tell you to leave,
But I think I price stuff fairly and I am flexible within reason.
