1996 GT vs 2001GT

Schaake.... if he stays stock, you can catch up to him with some bolt ons. Gears, open exhaust, intake filter.... I think that puts you right around the time of a newer GT. If I'm wrong I'm sure someone here will correct me.

If you don't want to get the gears, find some 14 inch rims and tires to borrow for the day instead. Since your talking about 14 second cars traction isn't a huge issue, and losing the drivetrain weight will help drastically.

are there any reasonable priced mods that i could add to keep up with him?
people seem to figure that the best mod to do for non PI cars is to add PI heads, which entail buying some, either new or used, and having them installed. but i think this is a comparatively expensive mod i think...so gears would help, exhaust, and mods to help the engine breathe better will also help you out..

to be honest if i had a non PI car, I'd save up and spend the money for the PI heads..then go from there :)

He probably has at least a good half second on you ET wise depending on driver ability of course. A nice stall with gears and a tire will get you out of the whole real quick, and not too far behind him if any IMO.

The first thing you need are gears - 4.10s are your best bet. Second, get a 3000-3200 stall torque converter along with a valve body(I use a Performance Automatic street/strip one). This will get you moving pretty good. mid-14's should be easy. After that, save up for some ported PI heads and aggresive cams, along with some longtube headers. That's pricey - but it's also alot of HP!

Or just drop a mach 1 motor in that slug. :D

96 is capable of high 14's, an 01 is capable of high 13's.
of course, this is if the driver knows what he's doing and the track/conditions are great.

I agree with these times. I know a few guys that are high 13's on near-stock 99-up GT's. It's a little harder to do in an automatic. But with gears, it should be easy. If you can't bust out a 14.99 (at least) with ANY late model Mustang, then you've got problems.

BTW, my first time EVER down the track was a 15 flat. hahaha! Don't worry, I've gotten better.

Have fun, be safe, and LINE 'EM UP!

this guy doesnt sound like a drag racer or someone who practies launching. Their first runs will be high.

pi head swap shoud put you right up there with him. ha ha. just kidding. you don't really have a prayer. my car with as people put "clown shoe looking" 20inch rims complete wasted a 98 last night. I even let him jump me huge because I wan't going to race(then my ego stepped on the gas). he had some mods too. I say thow a 100shot on it if you are going to the track. that will be the cheapest way for you to get to that performace level. gears would be another good option. for a "cheaper" mod. anything eslse is just not gong to make a big enough dent.

I don't think that the PI heads are the answer to all pre 99 cars. I think for the money that you put into labor if your not mechanicly inclined and buying them isn't worth it. Bolting on a blower upgrading your pulley will easily put you 2 times higher then just pi heads.
