1996 GT vs 2001GT

I consider myself a decent driver but all I could put down in my car totally stock is a 15.2 and I drove it like I hated it. Exhaust, MAC CAI, and stickier tires brought me to a 14.8 I belive. All that is to that to the 4 tenths are the tires IMO. Then I did pullie's, 3.73's, Auburn HD rear, Seat Delete kit, Spare + carpeting removed, Mickey T's ET Streets, Alum. D/S, 02 PI Intake Man. I dunno I'm hopin for 13's I think I got enough to get me movin pretty quickly. Were gonna find out in a few months. 96 vs a 99 stock it's not gonna be pretty, maybe if u were a 5speed n could shock the tires n get him outta the hole, but your both gonna be puttin off the line. OFF TOPIC can you do the AUTO SHUFFLE IN A MOD CAR? I know the 5.0 guys used to do it?

I have gotten my 98 gt down to a 14.4@95 w/ exhaust and k&n! YOU just have to practice and figure your car out! I hope to break into the 12's this season...I have high expectations! Just waiting on my tax refund :D

you don't need to, SN95+ automatics have gates for 1st, 2nd, and you can hit 3rd by putting it in D with OD off.

I ran 14.5s at 96 all day long with just a K&N and a catted h-pipe, but I've got a 5spd. I also beat plenty of 99+ GTs at the track, but it was because their drivers weren't up to par. You both have autos, so driver error is pretty much out of the question unless he drives it into the wall and you win by default.

I'd say gear it and get some drag radials. Otherwise, I'd headswap it, but thats not exactly a "cheap" mod, though it certainly is a worthwhile mod.

I saw that there are some unbelievers of putting the PI heads on the 96-98 GT's. I have a 96 GT and installed the PI heads, PI intake manifold, a 10:1 compression ratio DSS block with forged rods, pistons and crank, MAC cold air induction w/K&N filter, BBK 70mm throttle body, C&L intake plenum, BBK tuned length exhaust headers, BBK H-pipe no cats, Flowmaster 3 chamber exhaust, and 3:73 gears and unless a 99-04 was modified, I had no problem out running them. Next will be a Vortech supercharger. That should be interesting!

If you want to run with him the most popular mod for the non-PI's is the PI cam/intake swap, it's much easier and cheaper than the full headswap. If you don't want to get into the engine then go for gears and midpipe.
I suppose you could always wait till he's not looking and pull a cop off one of his plugs.:D
