Just wanted too know if the 1998 gt really has 225 hp? I thought it was exactly the same as the 1996-1997?Is it worth getting the 1998 over a 1996 then? Also anyone dyno these two and see if there is a difference?

I think that 225 is net my friend not RWHP. Its probably more like 200 if that at the rear wheels.

96-97 GT's have 215 HP 285 TQ. 98's have 225 HP and 295 TQ. The difference is a more aggresive computer tune in the 98. Either one is a dog until you do the PI headswap or toss a 4v in there

187 x 1.15 = 215 manual
187 x 1.2 = 224.4 automatic

Actually, it's

187/.85=220.0 for a manual
187/.80=233.75 for an automatic

I have a 98 gt and I don't believe there is a big difference compared to the 96-97. If I were you I would just get a 96-98 gt with the lowest possible miles and do a headswap or small nitrous kit. But yes the 98's do have 225 BHP and 290 TQ. Also get a five speed coupe and get gears as your first mod. 3.73's at least and that will help make up for some of the lack of power. If I where you though and your really looking into going fast I would start with a 99+ because you already have a good foundation with the PI heads and better gearing. You can usually get 99's and 2000's for pretty cheap now.

Instead of spending $13-15k on a 13.9 second 99+ GT why not spend 11-12K on a 96-98 Cobra. Sure, stock for stock they run about even with the GT's. But slap in some gears to get them into their powerbands and then the GT is toast. Their is so much more potential in the 4V motors it doesn't make sense to drop the cash on a used GT when a Cobra would be about the same or less.

10HP is nothing significant when you are talking about 215 or 225 (less than 5%) especially when only 8-8.5 is getting to the wheels. That isn't a difference anyone is likely to notice. What you will notice is a shortage of aftermarket parts for the 98. The 98 is just unique enough that many parts are available for any year except 98. Otherwise there isn't much difference.

A few things the '98 are unique with is the fuel rail and I believe fuel pump, pretty much the whole fuel system of the 98 is unique.. when I did a headswap I had to replace the fuelrail with a 97 fuel rail to add an adjustable fuel regulator.... I dont understand Ford sometimes...
