I took some pictures of my intake manifold once it was removed from my car. As you can see from the pics there was a huge crack on the inside of the housing. And there is also a pic of the new manifold with the aluminum crossover...dont mind the dirty engine...

Same here, everyone that owns the stangs with those plastic themrostat housing all have the same problem. I wonder if FORD recalled them back in the day...

I think ford had to know pretty soon after they released the mustang for those years that the intake was going to be a problem. mine busted in september 03. i know the recall ended some odd months ago though.

Not exactly a recall, but an extended warranty (7yrs/70k miles) on 96/97 stangs only not '98-01 which also had plastic crossovers. There were some other fords that were covered as well i.e. some of the same years t-birds and cougars. Pretty lame coverage by Ford.
Not a huge deal, but anyone who still has the all plastic one should just swap it with an updated one with the aluminum crossover piece and this topic would be done.

by upper intake you mean the plenum and TB right?
vaccum leak...listen for hissing sound. you just probably forgot to reconnect something.......either that or the gasket under your plenum is leaking
