2.3L T5 trans fluid

What is the proper trans fluid to use in a T5 from an 88 2.3L? Last three digits on the i.d. tag are 162. I know the World Class T5's require ATF, but I don't think the 2.3L trans were World Class in '88.

What would be really great is if someone has access to the original owner's manual or a real Ford shop manual and could quote what the recommendation was.

I have a 88 turbo coupe and it uses ATF in the tranny(T5)

according to ford: mercon atf, 5.5 pints.

You can also use Pennzoil Synchromesh in the tranny, a few people have recommended it.

However it's expensive. I had a slight fiasco a couple years ago where I ended up having my transmission out a couple times, the first time I filled it with synchromesh, but I had to pull it again and lost a lot of the fluid, so I just refilled it with ATF.
