I went to visit my son at Syracuse University Yesterday. I left real early (4:15 AM) so I could cruise without traffic, since it’s a 300 mile one way trip. First there’s this stupid area on Rt.9 in CT that has 2 stoplights on a highway. I made it through the lights just fine, but right after that there was a cop hiding off to the side. He pulled me over and asked me if I knew how fast I was going. I said 70, even though I know it was more. He said he clocked me at 74. Then he asked if I knew what the speed limit is. I said 65, though I knew it was less. I was shocked to find out it was only 45. I told the cop: “As far as I was concerned this had nothing to do with unsafe driving, public safety or disobeying the posted speed limit, it’s simply another tax.” He didn’t seem to like that, stating that he wasn’t out there just to impose taxes on people. One the up-side, he gave me a “driving too fast for conditions” warning ($90) rather than a driving 74 in a 45 ticket.

A couple hours later, about 6:30 AM, I’m on Rt.90 in NY doing about 85. It’s still dark and not a sole on the road. Rt.90 is a nice highway to cruise on as exits are spaced about 30 miles apart. Then these headlights come up behind me for a bit and sure enough, it’s another cop. I get pulled over and he asks me if I knew how fast I was going and I said 80. He said he clocked me doing 85 in a 65. I didn’t make any comments about this being just another tax, and this time I got an actual ticket. Though what really bugs me is the ticket doesn’t state how much money they want, just a sign here for guilty or there for not-guilty. Plus there’s a second piece of paper that shows my answer to his “do you know how fast you were going” question has been documented. When I said 80, I didn’t realize what I said was going to be used as evidence against me. I almost feel like I should have been read my “Miranda Rights” before answering that question. I think from now on, if I get asked if I know how fast I was going, the answer will always be whatever the posted speed limit is regardless of my actual speed.

Anyone know what the fine is for traveling 20 miles over the speed limit on a highway in NY?

I'd like to side with you on this one, and tell you what a no-good blankity-blank the cops are, but jeez, are you trying to get tickets? I mean 30 mph over the posted limit on the first one and two hours later you get busted for 20mph over? Good luck in court and with your insurance agent, who'll likely by buying a Ferrari on your premium increase...

Well hopefully NY will just want the money and thats all.. as for CT you have to go to court and see if you can get it reduced....

LOL. The CT one won't put any points on my license cause it was given as a warning. That one I'll just pay the $90. It's not worth my time to waste half a work day to go to court and have it reduced.

As for the NY one, 85 on Rt.90 is actually quite respectable for me. When traffic permits I hang in the 90 to 95 area. At least I did up until now. I used the cruise control set to 74 all the way home, which felt so slow I thought I'd fall asleep. I haven't gotten a speeding ticket for at least 10 years, so I guess I'm due.

Yes! You know the area then. Traffic lights are apparently much cheaper than proper entrance and exit ramps.

After all the victims services surcharges, taxes, etc., a basic ticket up here in BC will net you $177. Traffic fines double in construction zones and excessive speeding (30 kph over the limit) will cost you just under $380.

Used to drive through there twice a week back in the '80s and early '90s.

Round here jail time is a substitute for the fine. If I didn't have a job and I didn't mind sleeping with Buba I'd do the time in the clink.

Dang speed limits up north sound like they are a little low.
You might consider investing in some electronic counter measures, and maybe slow down just a hair. Ah, who am I kidding. I drove 100+ across Texas on I 20 a couple times.

i made it from lubbock to austin (300 miles) in a record time of just over 4 hours once. on a good day doing just around the speed limit, including gas stops normally takes me about 5-6 hours depending on traffic. i know a bunch of little side routes that i have never once seen a cop on so i can literally fly through there.

Back last Thursday, 1/2NK left her Grandmother's house in Tucson about 0520 Arizona time. At around 1430 (also AZ time), she was calling me from the line to get in the main gate at Ft Sam Houston (San Antonio, TX). Mapquest sez that little run was 875 miles.
And she had to stop and feed her '02 Silverado 4x4 "Son of Generic Chevy Truck" three times along the way

Being "the Dad", I asked her just how the He(ck) fast she was driving.

"Well, Dad, it's been raining pretty hard, so I slowed down to 75-80 for the last bit."

She must get it from her mother. I never taught her to drive like that.......

Thanks

Sounds like the Valentine1 is a quality detector. Interesting info on their site regarding tinted windows too.

So which detector, if any, on your list in that last thread did you end up getting?

I had decided on the escort 8500. I just seemed like the best bang for the buck. I looked around and read a lot of reviews before I bought anything.

Here is what I said in the other post it describes the detector I got and how well it works.

"I just thought I'd give you guys a heads up. I got a totally different detector from the ones I listed above. I bought a k40 RD-850. I just happened to find it at a car stereo place in Waterloo IA. It was 225 dollars and it came with a one year no ticket guarantee. It works pretty well, detecting radar and laser emissions at about a mile away. I am still going to bet that the escort 8500 is a better detector but the one I got is pretty good and saved me and the people following me from a few tickets yesterday.

An unexpected side affect of using the detector was that after the first couple alerts it really made me more cautious. In fact I actually kept my speed to 5 to 7 miles over the posted limit. It was probable just because I was still unsure of the detectors abilities and didn’t want to push my luck. Over hills it was awesome because it detected upcoming speed traps in time for you to slow down. In traffic the detector couldn’t be beat because you can hid in a group, but on the highway alone you might get hit by one of those instant on radar guns, although even without the detector you can see the officer coming, if your paying attention that is.

Woo whoo I finally feel a little safer from the coppers. I will tell you that if you are driving I-35 through Kansas you really have to watch out because they are out in droves. The Kansas State Troopers drive Crown Vics in light blue, bronze, white and of course black. None of the units I saw had lights on the top of their cars, so they were pretty stealthy. The detector picked up every single on of them that had their radar running, and although the detector’s harsh alarm made me jump a few times, I was glad to hear it"
