2000 GT, Intake cracked today, smoke show going down the road - question.(pics)

So I'm driving my car today and part of the intake manifold cracked where a heater hose(?) comes off the firewall and into the manifold, Im just curious how common this is or why it may of happened, the car has 75K miles. I noticed the intake is plastic which kinda surprised me but I guess ford has there reasons for using it.

When this occurred it caused quite a smoke show,smoke was billowing out from behind my car and from under the hood, also my right rear tire, rear bumper area / taillights etc got coolant sprayed all over them, my motor was totally drenched as well.. Good times...

Not much to explain here lol...

hey man... thats the line that goes from the engine to the heater core (climate control). the best thing to do is to change the intake manifold which runs for about 250.00 i think.. thats for thwe stock fodr racing one. quick repair? plug it or find a tube or something that can fit throught the manifold and onto the line, but this is only a temporary thing. eventually will crack again... th process to swap the manifold my look tortuous but it is rather simple. the haynes manual has a good description on how to do it. hope this helps. keepme posted on what ur thinking on doing. cheers!

The intake manifolds on 96-00 typically crack at the plastic coolant crossover, found on the front of the intake. I have not seen one break back at the firewall though. The revised intake, which features an aluminum coolant crossover, still has a plastic nipple for that particular coolant line that broke on you. Hopefully this is just a fluke, though you may want to see if something applied force to the line causing a break before you replace the intake.

pretty rare...check ebay.. i just swapped my intake do to it cracking abd i got a really nice one off ebay for $90

Yea I was also wondering why it would break at this neck location, Maybe the hose was somehow restricted and the force of the motor twisting etc caused it to eventually snap off, but I was able to move the hose around fairly easy so not sure...

I called a nearby shop and they said it would be $990 for parts & labor lol.. the kicker is they claim the intake costs $550 but that cant be right? I checked napa.com and they have one for $270, I wasn't able to find the actual intake i'd need on ford racing's website.

Since coolant sprayed all over your engine, you may want to check to see if your plugs got wet. Cause if they did your cars going to start running bad. Be sure to clean all that stuff up.

^+1 at the same time you may want to replace your plugs for peace of mind and not running into misfire issues after the intake install is done.

FWI, check the Corral for any used ones!

Thanks for all the info, I have an extended warranty but I was thinking about doing it myself or at another shop because carmax is so backed up with repairs ill probably be without of my car for close to 2 weeks

However I talked to carmax again today and looks like they can fix it with me only having to pay a $50 deductible (but still have to wait 1 1/2 to 2 weeks) Kind of hard to pass up on that price tho...

Ugh decisions..

which ever way you go about fixing it, definatly change your plugs to avoid any misfiring issues...another good idea would be to go and buy just the boots for your C.O.P's...it'll save you from having to spend $230 on new ones and it'll also help against misfiring issues if any of your old boots got wet...should only cost you around $32ish

I ended up taking it to another shop that is able to do the repair under my warranty, only thing is since they charge more for labor / parts vs. carmax I have to pay $225 out of my pocket but I get the car back tomorrow or Friday, Works for me.

I was planning on changing the spark plugs soon anyway, Ive had the car over 2 years and havent even looked at the current plugs yet. (car has been running good so haven't bothered).

The shop guy who looked at the car was surprised the intake snapped where it did, he says they'll check the hose etc to make sure nothing odd was going on.

CarMax=2 wks for a repair? OMG - I'd seriously consider fighting that as it's unreasonable to think someone should go for 2 wks without their car for a fix that takes less than a day. I can understand being backed up, but 2 wks is ridiculous. Negotiate and I'd bet they'll pony up and pay at least part of the money you are having to shell out of pocket for someone to do it in a timely manner. (It pays to bitch!)

I hadn't thought of that I just may try lol.

I got the car back today and the intake looks different than the original,
But the car seems to have a little more power, I'm not sure if its due to the new intake?

However now I get a random misfire (hesitation) Im guessing most likely due to coolant getting all over the coil packs / spark plugs on passenger side (as warned by other users above)..ill have to check it out tomorrow morning.

same thing happened to mine a few years ago. Make sure you clean the engine well and get all the coolant out of the plug holes

Since the car was running fine before I took it into the shop (other than cracked intake) they told me to bring it in real quick so they could pull engine codes etc. free of charge.

Turns out cylinder 4 coil is dead (which is the one closest to the intake leakage) so probably got coolant inside, they tried blowing it out with compressed air etc. but no go..

Now i just need to buy a coil, I'm assuming I should only buy a Motorcraft replacement coil? Autozone has a duralast coil for $39 but not sure if I should trust it. Napa lists two different coils for my car but i cant tell what the difference is? (Other than price) Check it out: NAPAONLINE
