2000 GT Stuck in Reverse?

Hey guys,

The other day I was backing up in my driveway and went to shift back into first and for some reason my shifter is stuck in reverse (its a 5 spd). I've tried rocking it out of reverse but it won't budge. The transmission has always shifted great and there hasn't been any excessive wear and tear on my tranny so I can't see my transmission going out at 70,000 miles. I called a friend thats a ford mechanic and he said it might be something called the 5th gear lock out. Does this make any sense?

i had a friend that snapped a little five dollar part in his trans and it got stuck in 4th. the shifter moves a rod and that rod is conected to the piece he broke. the guy that fixed it said that Ford makes that certain part weak.

I called the dealership to order the part and they didn't have a clue what I was talking about. Waiting on my friend to call me back with more info. I hope its only a small part keeping it stuck in reverse... I really can't afford a new transmission.

Well the people they stick in the parts department are sometimes hard to deal with. talk to a transmition shop ask what they think. i was just sharing my experience, your thing could be different

on the other hand, used T-45 is cheap enough, replace small parts inside(and labor for that) might not be worth doing...

I just swapped out trans(25000mile unit off of 00 GT for 350bucks) when mine went(so i thought anyway) the way of dodo bird...

Well I had the thing towed down to a transmission shop and before they do anything they want me to agree to 300-400 in labor to pull the transmission. Does this sound like a normal procedure for the thing being stuck in reverse?

VERY common with the t-45. I've heard of dozens of guys having probs with them sticking in Reverse.

Unfortunately the trans needs to be open to fix it. I forget the exact cause but a partial rebuild is needed.

Do you have the means to pull the tranny yourself? My buddy just had his T-45 rebuilt and the shop said it was $250 for R&R the trans and if he did it he could save that cash

Well guys I towed it to another shop my friend reccomended and got the same story but this guys only charging 300.00 to pull my trans. He told me to be prepared to spend about a grand on rebuilding it. They also offered to replace the clutch for an extra 400.00 is this worth it? The car has 70,000 miles on it and the clutch feels fine but I don't want to have to go through all of this again in a few months.
