2001 GT metal brake line (rear)

Question......

My 2001 GT is going for inspection soon and I noticed the other day that my mufflers were wet with something. Closer inspection revealed that I am leaking brake fluid from the metal brake line that runs from the front of the car to the rear! It looks as though it was damaged right above the pass. muffler (it's the one that supplies the rear pass. caliper). Previous owner (idiot) took a rubber hose and electrical tape and tried to mend it! I cleaned the area but didn't desturb the damaged area because it isn't leaking bad (fluid level is still good and pedal feels great). So I didn't want to make it worse. The bad thing is...I also don't know how severe the damage is (pin hole or slit in half)!

I was looking all over the net for a factory replacement line and can't find one (any idea's where to look??)
It goes for inspection at a local Ford Dealer (Phillips Ford) soon and I will let them mess with it. Just curious what this might cost to fix and part availability!

I quess this line can't be repaired they will need to replace it huh!
Any idea on cost to replace it???

Thanks...Sorry for all the questions........but since I can't find anyone that sells it I have no idea what they cost and what a garage may charge to replace it!

If it's a straight section, and you know someone who is GOOD at using a double flare tool, they can install a new peice of line with some flare fittings.

Autoparts stores sell straight peices of brake line, you just need to find the correct size line and fittings....and someone who can double flare.

Most likely ford is the only source for a new line, but you'll need to see if the opriginal line can be removed in a section. It may run the entire lenght of the car and require a lot of things to be removed, like the trans crossmemeber and other parts that are a lot of work....so you may end up just needing to repair a small section.

I have no problem having the line repaired (it seems alot easier not to mention cheaper)...but I wonder if a dealer would do this (I don't know anyone with this ability).

The other thing that worries me....
Is it legal (inspection wise) to repair a brake line or is it one of those things that will need replaced!

I don't see why not? I have never heard anything otherwise about repairing lines not passing.

A dealer might do it, but they might choose to replace the entire line since it costs more and they make more money that way.

It's an easy fix....if you can find someone that has the ability to double flare.

Thanks for the info!

I re-checked the line and it is just after a bend. Damage is in about a 4" straight piece! If repaired they would need to re-bend the repaired piece of tube!

Get it repaired. Ford only sells that as an assembly (it includes the Fuel line, EVAP line and brake line) and it runs $250+. I had the joy of having to replace a section of the EVAP line. Very easy to fix if you have the tools and parts (tube cutter and bender if needed, and tube unions and tubing), I used a vendor of mine to get me the parts and tools and I fixed it my self.
