right now i have 255/40 firestones on my car but i was thinking of moving to something alittle wider like 275/40 (on stock 17s) i know it can be done but i am wonder how they handdle the turns? I know they get good grip in the 1/4 but everyday to school or work i am on a twisty mountian road with no cops and a speed limit of "55" so handling is important to me. Which tire should i get?

The reason i am thinking 255/45 is becuase the bigger profile will help me with traction but still fit on the rim.

My other problem is i like the look of 255/40 on teh stock rims it's just more....maybe if some could post a pic of 275/40 and 245/45.

thanks,
bob

I heard that for the optimum handling, you get something wide in the rear and no bigger than 255's on the front. So 275/40/17's in the back and 255/45/17's in the front. You can get a lower profile in the front, it doesn't really matter to the speedometer or odometer.

03-04 Cobras use 275/40 all around, but their wheel is closer dimensionally, if not identically, to a Cobra R wheel. I've seen 275's all around on stock wheels, but I didn't want to try it. I wasn't comfortable putting that much tire up front on an 8" wheel that sits that far in the fender, clearance issues.

If you don't mind running a different size on the back, 275/40 on the back would match well to the 255/40 up front.
