289's...at the drag strip

Usually at drag events on the track, you usually see all the bigger engines runnin....302's, 350's, 351's, 400's, etc. But (in my experience) I usually dont see many 289's out there. But heres a good question...Have any of u ever seen a 289 beat or at least keep up with the bigger engines? Whats the greatest amount of torque and hp that u guys have ever heard of a 289 getting up too?

I use to hold my own aginst most mild big block cars. You really cant rate a 289 by torque, they make horsepower in the upper rpm range and need alot of rear gear to get them moving instead of torque.....

Yah, suspension would be a very important componant if you want to compete with a 289. What steps would you guys suggest in getting more torque numbers for a 289?

I don't see any advantage to a smaller motor. A 289 can run some good numbers, but will have to work harder to keep up.

Smal small blocks are fun if you can beat a bigger motor. But it takes a deep wallet if you want to perform like a 377 or bigger.1320stang has gone 10's with them though, N/A

like it has been stated before. How fast a 289 is, is directly proportional to the amount you plan on putting in it. A 7000+ rpm 289 is easily done with the right parts and can be made to go deep in the 10s n/a. It has been done not only on this board but on hardcore50 too. I know jay allen went high 10s with a 289 back in the late 80s.
