292 Y BLOCK...........

Just picked up a 292y block dose anyone know anything about this engine? It came off from a 1954 ford truck dont remember what model but how much is it worth looks like in good shape.... He told me clean it and it will run. as in take off all the dirt from it and grime Its been sitting in a storage for 25 years was running when takin out.

The Y-blocks were often used in early model T-birds as well as other Ford products.

Not an easy or realistic fit for a Mustang, if that's your question.

They were not rare in 1955...
But this is 2006. Not a common block these days.

The 292 is pretty rare because people are starting to take them out of the old 50's fords and shoe horning the *gag* Chevy and newer Windsor blocks in. The Y block, IIRC, are specific to the 50's and way early 60's. The motor mounts are vertical rather than horizontal, so they tend not to be used in the Windsor cars without modified motor mounts, similar to the 390's, and IIRC about the 390's in the Mustangs, they have a special motor mount for the 390 to go into the stock Mustang mounts. The Y blocks are a pretty stout little engine though. I was looking for one for my 57 Fairlane or my cousins 57 Ranchero. Does the one that you have come with the Ford-o-matic or the cruise-o-matic?

If my memory is correct (and it might not be) I think 1961 was the last year of the Y block. I wouldn't use one in anything other than a car that they originally came in. I doubt if it would be worth a whole lot because there's not a lot of demand for them. Now if you had one of the 312 fuel injected engines it might bring some money.

I dont know all I know is it came off a 1954 truck as I was told. Its been sitting in his garage for 25+ years, before that it was sitting in the truck. I was told is was a running engine, and i really do belive the guy.
The guy that gave it to me Has A GT.500 Eleanor. And its the REAL THING NOT A CLONE. HE Has a Picture with Carroll Shelby And writen Documents that its real I have never seen such a nice car and he has two other Real GT.500 sitting in his garage. Wow I would have loved to be him.

The 292 isn't worth a whole lot, your best bet would to bo tear it down and Ebay it off piece by piece if you can't sell it whole. I have a friend with a '54 F-100 with a 292 that might be interested if the price was right, but we're in the Oklahoma City area. He does need a balancer/crank pulley.

My grandpa's got a 272 in his '56 F100. I LOVE the 272/292/312 line. They are great engines. How much did you want for it? It might be time to swap the 272 sometime in the next 10 years, and I like to be ready.

yeah 64 or 65 for the light duty trucks. i think they went as far as 67 for the HD trucks but i might be mistaken there.

If it is a truck 292, it should have a forged crank and would be very desirable for a vintage racer. Check for casting lines on the crank (narrow = stock, wide = forged). Y-blocks, especially stock bore ones are desirable for those restoring 1st gen T-birds and other Fords. The Ys are heavy, though, and are as large and heavy as a 429.

Ive seen them stock with dual quads and superchargers, but never FI.

the 292 is a vary popular engine in the old fords I would think it would be pretty easy to sell on ebay.

I have a 312 with a single 4bbl and a 3speed OD unit that I am going to put in my 46 pickup. They are a neat engine, solid lifters and a stock airgap intake. And because of the low compression you can idle them at 300rpms, you can count the fan blades going by at idle

well I have been trying to clean up this block now comes the painting process What color do I paint this thing? I am guessing it was a ford Red color but not sure or could be Orange?

could have been either red or orange. red i think for t-birds and orange for everything else. i'm sure someone else will know for sure but i have seen them in both colors mostly like i stated above.

well the tranny is orange for sure but i cant tell the color of the block.. Were the block and the tranny color'd the same back then?

yeah they should be the same color. hemi orange is pretty close BTW.
