3.73s

I'm thinking about upgrading to the 3.73s. i know that w/a 5 spd. and 4.10s, first gear is pretty much useless. How about 1st w/3.73s. Are there any traction concerns w/stock rubber?

Go here:

I can go about 30 in 1st at about 5500RPMs. Not useless. 4.10's will put your motor at 4,000RPM's for the next gear. That should be about your torque peak RPM. I said they're perfect!!!

I know what you mean... I want to get the best I can, but I also don't want to burn this motor, even though it is EFI.

I want gears that give me the push, but I still want to run highway speeds over 80mph wihtout killing my motor minute by minute.

Hee Haw...

I've had 4.10's for about a month now and they are great!

In bad weather, start out in 2nd and you get a smooth take off. Doesn't bog down like with 3.27 gear.

Definitely recommend the FRPP aluminum drive shaft, too. Had some vibration and noise with the stock shaft after 4.10 installation was completed.

I don't get this. Why do the 3.73s suck? Aren't they still much better than stock gears?
ya ! dont get me rong , the 3.73's are a "tad" better , but i have also had the 4.10's in the same car and the 4.10's are lots better ! the wife thought that 1st was to low and didnt like the 70mph. dron the 4.10's made, so the 3.73's got put in , she even says it dont run like the 4.10's did , but piss on it there in there now ...

So, on a scale of 1 to 10.... if stock gears is a '1' and 4.10s are a '10, what would you rate 3.73s?

you know i wish i would have went , stock , 3.73's , then to the 4.10's . but the way i did it ( stock to 4.10's ) it was a "BIG" jump , then back up to the 3.73's it almost felt stock to me so if i was to say rate 1 and 10 i'd go 4 or 5 ?. 3.73 are a good gear , but for me ( and thats a big one ,we all like other things) the 4.10's are lots nicer...

Ok. That gives me a better idea. So 3.73s are about halfway between stock and 4.10s.

5.0 Engine = 3.73
4.6 Engine = 4.10

Anything less, you're wasting your time and money and you are teh idiot. :notnice:

Not true, young chimchim. Depends on your application. I am very glad I have 3.73's not only for the highway but I've been able to drive the car in snow and ice. 4.10s would have been too much.
