They did numerous run tests like that. Initially they used the standard aluminum 4.6 block like the GT has, but they found it wasn't durable enough for use on the new supercharged Cobra motor so that's why they went to cast iron.

I've heard they do WOT testing when designing an engine but 3000 hours sound excessive. That is 125 days!

UM--
What happened to the aluminum block in testing? While I have not researched myself directly I've not seen any evidence that the iron block is needed around the stock power levels of the 03 Cobra

They claimed to have durability issues with it. I'm not exactly sure what specific failures were reported if any though.

hell if they did more than 30 seconds of WOT they would have figured out they needed to fix the cooling issue on what, cylinders 7 and 8?

i could imagine 30 hours of testing, bringing the motor from idle, up the rpm band under load, back down again, wot, holding certain rpm points, and repeat, all being computer controlled and monitored around the clock. i could see lubrication issues, oil breakdown from excessive heat, etc, from anything longer.

3000 hours is insanely excessive. 125 days is 1/3 the year! even the 'El Es Juan built by the hands of god, could not last.

I'll see if I can find the link again, but I believe the actual WOT run was 1000 hours straight.

this is from "Iron Fist, Lead Foot"

To further strengthen the engine, a decision was made to go with a nearly indestructable cast iron block, rather than the aluminum block found in the 2001 Cobra.

"It was only a little more durable, but you know, at that point, I had to go with the best parts I had." Coletti stresses. At that point we'd just spent all this money on the rods, so do you want to go with this block that's just five or ten percent less capable? I say no. It has nothing to do with money - hell if it had anything to do with money I never would have put those rods in there. I'll tell you, two of those rods cost more than a whole block"

also, in the book they talk about the 300 hour test.. not 3000...

That's because Ford doesn't know how to make an aluminum V8 engine

Pretty sad ain't it?

now is that 300hr continual useage (idle, wot, constant rpm, under load, etc) conditions or 300hrs at WOT only?
