347 "carb'd" stroker???? let the war begin...

In all seriousness I didn't expect so much feedback, so I wanted to let everyone know I appreciate it!!! :SNSign:

This topic is a heated one to say the least. The funny part is that people probably think i'm biased towards carbs, but it's more that i'm educated about them and not afraid to get my hands dirty to make my car run right, and i don't have the budget for a nice EFI build. I guess i get carried away sometimes but somebody has to take the underdog's side right?

One last thought... You said you were going to use a Lakewood Bellhousing, check out Quick Time Bellhousings, They are half the weight of a Lakewood piece, and also have the SFI cert. # if that is important. They also sell one that is has passed the SFI testing but is not certified, if your going road racing it may not need the SFI #. Drag racing would require the part with the SFI cert. #. Quick Time Bellhousings started making them for sprint cars and branched out to us regular folks. They even make a bellhousing to adapt a chevy (horrors) engine to a Ford trans and vice versa.

this is true.....its all great info though! I just need a shove in one direction or another... right now im just plain confused lol!

those are nice any idea how much? couldnt find a price anywhere?

Plus the Quick Time Bellhousing allows for more header clearance, plus there is still room inside for a dual disc clutch, I know because I use the Quicktime Bellhousing and am using a Mcleod dual disc clutch and am running long tube headers, and the bellhousing is perfect for the application. I also love the fact that it only weighs about 22 lbs. A Lakewood or Mcleod Scattershield wieghts about 45 lbs.

Waffles/pancakes
Hey 5spgt they don`t use around (lol) 750 cfm:bs: , but they do use 850`s just not at dega or daytona.
Carb is old school, no way no how.
Me thinks someone has been smoking their socks.

750-830 CFM for NASCAR.

Depends on the racing restrictions for the particular race.

85_SS_Coupe - Where can you get the carb tuning video at?

Thanks:)

And yes, too bad for the original poster... mine is an 86' so only one more 2yr inspection with... ehhem... my efi engine.

So I was generalizing for the masses who no nothing about the Pacific North West. No Blood, No Foul, but yes you are right.

Seriously...it doesn't get any easier than that. It's nothing you can't get in a book, but being a narrated video makes it so much easier to follow and understand what they're telling you to do. With that and some basic hand tools and understanding of how to read spark plugs, there isn't a person on this forum who couldn't tune a carb.

Thank you. I will likely purchase it soon and check it out.:nice:

Leaving it open if anyone has a better video to watch...

Honestly, if i had money to burn, i would build one of those EFI setup that uses a carbed intake drilled to accept fuel injectors and i'd run a throttle body on top. I will admit that i'm completely biased towards the way a nice carb engine looks compared to an EFI engine..i just like the clean wire free simplicity of it.

There was a guy local who had a '65 with a DOHC 4.6 in it, and at a glance it looked like a carbed big block because of how he had the intake and throttle body and carb style breather setup.

EDIT:

Come to think of it, if i were rich i'd just install a dyno in my garage next to the hydraulic car lift and tune my EFI turbo engine myself :D

A carburetor installed on a car that came with EFI WILL NOT pass emissions in the NAZI state of Washington no matter how clean it is out the tailpipe. Once the hood is opened, your toast! If you can get thru without opening the hood, then fine. But some of us are not so lucky to live where emissions testing is not an issue. The only thing going for us here is that once the car is 25 years old, then there is no more emissions testing to worry about, and you can get a vehicle of special interest plate and not have to license it again. Kind of off topic, SORRY!

I do agree on washington as a nazi state, but here in pierce county they do not lift the hood or look for cats, they only want the sniffer tests (fuel cap and exaust).
I sold the 89 because of the inspection garbage and it was at the point that it needed a computer tune to get the hp out of it.
Im very happy with my carbed 80 (looks like 85) and its much faster than my 89gt.

Ok so I just picked up an 89 gt for next to nothing I'm going to build the car for the track and the occasional weekend ride. This WILL NOT be a d/d. I have completely gutted the interior (red):notnice: :notnice: tore the motor down to the bare block because supposedly it was a sportsman block...er...not so much just a stocker..:notnice: I think I'm going to go with a 347 stroker, with a main girdle and a windage tray new oil pump etc I'm going to re-use the block so the obvious freshen up will go along with that. 28oz sfi flywheel and 28oz fluid dampner...... That is all first.

I'm not rich by no means so I was thinking of going with AFR 185's 1.6 rockers, I have no idea what kind of cam? and I was thinking of going with....drumroll.......a victor juinor intake and a demon 750 carb.

I already have a dry nitrous set up but will change to a 200 shot wet kit.

Car has 4.10's stock tranny but i want to go with a tremec and a lakewood bell housing.

So with all that what do you guys think any feedback would be great...

I am also going to be doing the full engine bay smooth out along with new paint. This is obviously going to be like a year long project............

it seems the simple 347carb guys make great numbers
hardcore 5.0 ,corral site has some threads as well

i dont really care fuel injected or carbed
i just like fast cars
the neat look under the hood is nice

I didn't bother reading any of the posts because i don't care what anyone has to say. i bought my notch already carbed, and i love it.. in fact, it was one of the main reasons why i got it, because carbed cars are the ****. when fuel injected guys can go out in their driveway and tune their cars with almost nothing but a phillips head, come back to me... fuel injection is iight, but i'd go carbed ANY day of the week.. i can't wait 'til i get a good tune on my car from this place in Jersey, and then we'll see what's up. i'm hoping for mid-high 12's out of her. (until i put on the blower, that is)

umm, i guess i have to do alot more work for tuning, because i have to find a 5/8 wrench to loosen a nut, then the hard part, getting the allen key out of my glove compartment.

And your comment makes no sense, you can tune it easily in your driveway with a phillips head, but you can't wait to get a good tune from this place in jersey?

Why do you need to goto this place in jersey since you can do it yourself in your driveway with a phillips head?

be nice guys...

Not a D/D, no emissions requirements, trying to save a few pennies? Get a Vic Jr., a 4150 Holley (750 DP), an MSD distributor, good heads, healthy bumpstick, 100-150 shot, and go have fun!

I converted my car from carb'd to EFI about two years ago. I had mine tuned pretty well, but it was still a bit of a pain when it got cold out...and yes, seasonal problems did occur. But it all fairness it wasn't something untenable...just a little annoying. I'll say this much-I never had any surging problems with my little 600cfm 4bbl...I have had issues with that since my conversion to EFI. Again, it's not something I feel like wringing my hands about, but at least a slight annoyance.

Also, the thought that actual tuning (timing and fuel chart manipulation) isn't required for EFI...well, that's kind of a broad generalization; kind of like saying tuning a carb can be a pain in the a$$...yes, and no. To extract the most power and driveability out of a given combination, sometimes you have to manipulate the timing and fuel curves-more specifically-beyond what just jacking up the fuel pressure, or twising the dizzy can accomplish. Those are "global" adjustments, and while a benefit may be derived at one point in the operation, another may suffer-like trading top end for low speed driveability. In many instances, you can have both. This is where actual tuning takes the reigns-you put the fuel pressure at 40psi and set the timing at 10*, then change settings wherever you want instead of all over. Maybe setting the initial timing to 16* will get you the most power, but it may effect your off idle and low speed driveability. As was said before the ecm is an I/O device...and it's striving for close to perfect stoich-that is it's priority. There's no dyno installed with a feedback device in the transmission allowing the computer to figure, hmmm, well, I lost 8hp when I pulled that extra 2* of timing-but my A/F is dead on!

just my $0.02

FWIW...I use a PMS, and my tuning is pretty easy...I just need a W/B O2 to clean it up a little.

Well I have had both carb and efi and if i were to drive only on the street and never or rarely go to the track I would have stayed with my 89gt, but I like to go to the track and race and drive my car to and from and sometimes take it out on the town so I went carb because it was cheaper and its faster.
For the $$$ that was in my 89gt it just did not have the power i wanted, ran best of 13.25@102 both cars are AOD`s.
I just had the need for speed.:)
