So a buddy of mine has a 350Z and he is always saying he can beat the GT I used to own... Since I do not own it anymore it is impossible to just "take it to the track" so bench racing is our only recourse

I told him he would lose from a roll and even worse from a dig. Both cars are stock.

Yes the GT was a 2001 auto vert and the 350Z is a 2005 auto coupe both are essentially stock...

Isnt the 350 lighter? Aside from weight whoever doesnt blow the tires off should have the advantage, how well do the 350's handle in the twisties?

I don't know. It would be close, but I'd think both of you would lose when said wife drives by in '03 Cobra.

And it's droid#83853 FTW! View attachment 395921 Tell 'em about the new Imperial Blaster he just won Johnny!

Stock auto vert. You'd lose to a 6 speed Z pretty bad, and I think you'd lose to the auto one too.

Autos + 3.27 = not good. 4.10s change everything.

Let's see...

He's got 287hp to your 260hp.

He weighs about 240lbs less.

If he can launch he would get you from a dig. And depending on how well the transmission shifts while at speed, into it's powerband, he would get you from a roll as well.

He would have killed you in the "twisties" as well. Both stock of course.

I also noticed that the base msrp for an '05 350Z is $105 less than base msrp for an '01 GT convt.

I think that covers everything.

He would have won pretty comfortably and I now own the car

The auto kills the performance of this car, at least in stock form. Btw its getting 4.10s and a j mod soon, that should help some, not to mention the new t-trim. Even with the t trim its still a pooch off the line. My mom had a G35 coupe auto and it felt alot quicker than the 01 GT did when I first got it.

here are some pics for ya since its been a bit since youve seen it.

and the money shot

darkshadow, what emblem is that on the side? It looks like an ancient Ford hood badge or something.

They are a reproduction of original emblems from a 1965 Mustang GT. I got them on ebay. The rear supercharged emblem under the Ford logo is off a Cobalt SS.

When I had my 01 gt I raced a 2005 350z 6 speed with a cold air and a exhaust, I had 4.10's, X pipe, K+N, flowmasters ( add nothing there) and sct2 91 octane tune and I walked him three straight from a roll... I would say that 350z was a 13.9 car or so.. I would say the gt and 350z are a toss up in a drag race judging by that and what i have seen at the track and on there forums.

Guess I have to mention this again, I've been racing my good friends 03 350Z at the track for 3 years.

Both stock I would take him to the 1/8 but after that he'd walk me. From a roll, NO CHANCE for the GT.

We both have mods now. Roll or dig I win and thats still with my stock gear.

The auto 350Z isn't much slower than the stick. So to answer your question, Z wins.

I can 100% tell you for a fact that this GT would have lost easily to a 350Z auto, stick, from a dig or roll.

The auto in the mustang stock is a slug compared to most other stock auto performance cars. You can get the 4r70w to kick butt but it takes some extra $$ to do so. I got a quote for a 3500 stall converter, modified valve body, refreshen the trans, and trans cooler for $1800 installed.
