What exactly is touching the steering column? The block shouldn't as there is lots of room there. Headers might hit. Need more info. You should be able to bolt the motor in using the 65' 289 mounts. About the only difficult area is the exhaust. Custom headers are a necessity. Here is my 351w block with stock steering column 65' stang: Here is the a top shot of my 393w motor:

rbohm Founding Member Apr 12, 2002 6,698 550 204 tucson,az May 21, 2007 #3 May 21, 2007 #3 if you are careful you can dimple the tube that is touching the column, all you need is about 1/4" clearance. but then you cannot return the headers. you can also shim the engine mounts up a bit to gain clearance as well.
