Is it possible to build a 408 (or similar) for under $4800 if I build it myself. This would need to include all of the parts that I would need in addition to a 347 crate motor... ie new injectors are needed for the 347 so they do not count towards the cost...

What is everyones opinions of a PAW kit, plus some TW heads, etc... If anyone has a list of thier build can you email it to me? Just PM me for my email addy...

THANKS...

this is a great idea for a sticky: if I am rebuilding my 302 anyway, what extra parts would I need if I went with a 351 based solution rather than a 302 based solution?

the main things in a 351 based solution that would not be in a 302 based solution are: the block, oil pan, distributor, fuel rails (or a mod to the stock ones to spread them out more), swap headers, and i think there may be something about an accessory bracket or two that you need as well. probably a new hood would also be necessary. i suspect that there are more things to include, but they aren't coming to me right now.

of course, in order to take full advantage of the extra cubes, parts that flow better would probably be needed, which would presumably cost more than the 302 or 347 versions of the same parts.

GO 408. To go 347 you need a better flowing intake, bigger injectors, throttle body, MAF, headers, cam, and heads. The difference will be the added expense to a little bit bigger to fit the displacement, but that is deffinately a good thing. vic jr 351 intake 200cc+ heads, at least .550 lift cam. on a sn95 you can use the same brackets, trans, and motor mounts. The only real price difference is a 351 block instead of machining your 302 block, and if you get a block with a double hump pan already you're set there. Then just bolt on meatier components and you will have a stronger, more powerful motor.

About 2 years ago when I started my crazy project, the 427 kits were so high, I went 408. I have some specialized parts - light ULTRA lightweight connecting rods and a roller cam ..I stayed FI and all but it was like at least $1000 difference art the time. I dunno if prices went down but I ended up with 414 and worked out nicely... well took me a while to get the bugs out.

The 94-94 puters can be very difficult and finicky and create many issues. Now NOT to start a debate over "internet myth" about 94/95 puters being junk cuz they aren't..:nono: BUT they can certainly be a huge PIA with that adaptive technology that trips over itself...like when you put long tube headers on and it throws off the sensors in SOME car and not others! If you dont have a good programming device they are a pain.

So then a goal of a home built 400+ cu in motor for the cost of a 347 crate motor is very realistic?

Where are good places to get the block and rotating assembly and/or do you guys prefer to do your own block then local machining?

As I said at the other thread to someone else, you might want to talk to RNH performance on this. He has built many a big and small PA engine. If anyone can give you the best advice, I'd try Rick.

Cheapest route would probably be the 393 option. 351 rods, stroker crank (nodular is fine, forged is overkill if your running a f4te roller block), and 302 pistons. That would probably be the cheapest "around" 400ci 351 you could build. It really depends on how crazy you get with heads/cam/intake options.

And another thing to keep in mind is a descent intake manifold for an EFI 351 setup is almost double what a 302 intake cost. I know, it's BS but it is what it is. A TFS R intake costs NO MORE to cast than a Street Heat intake, but it costs 300.00 more??

True....

but we arent comparing a 408 to a 302. Its a 347 which will need a pretty healthy intake also.

And headers arent a built in "additional" cost for a 351 if you dont have them already. Plus, headers that you have on your 302 might not even be optimal for a 347. Creating a sticky would be difficult as there are a lot of things that are unique to each person's build.

And always remember....put 302, or even 347 parts on a 408....and you'll get 302/347 power witha little extra torque lol :p
