In 1983 or 84, a young BoatsHateMe bought a 1979 Cobra off the lot of a Ford dealer. I instantly fell in love with that car. This was a car I had to be careful with when driving. You didn’t just hammer the pedal anyoldwhere. Later that weekend I went out with some friends, let a lady friend drive as I’d had too much and she lost it on some ice on the road, totaling the car. Lots more to that story but that can be told over some beers around the fire.

As searchability has become easier over the years with technology I’ve Henn looking, and looking, for the color scheme I had. Makes me wonder now if this car had been repainted or who knows what.

What I had was the pewter color with black and orange trim and decals. It was the same color as the pace car but did not say pace car nor did it have any ponies on the side. It had the decal package and hood I’m pretty sure of the Cobra shown on the white car and the base pewter color of the pace car.

Has anyone ever seen the combination I am looking for? If I ever find one available I’m going to have to make it mine.

Light Pewter Metallic (1E) was a Pace Car-only paint color in model year 1979. All 1979 Pace Cars had that paint and no other 1979 Mustang had that paint.

The 1979 Cobra could have Silver Metallic (1G) paint and Cobra decals in black, bright red, and orange if ordered with black or red interior.

It’s very possible it was silver. In fact that was the color I was originally searching until I saw the pace car color was actually called pewter and I figured that must have been it. Still, I have yet to see any picture of the color scheme you described which makes me want it even more. Mine had the black interior.

The hood decal was optional in all three years.

As it should have been. Kind of gaudy but that’s what I like about it now.
So... my ride is out there, somewhere.

I did not buy it. By “finding it” I meant I found the pictures.
I am more motivated to find one now that I’ve seen the evidence.

Dude…Do yourself a favor, and move on past this.
An 80 Mustang Cobra was a decal.
It had an anemic power rating, Had completely obsolete TRX metric wheels/tires, and regardless of what engine was in it, wouldn’t fall off a cliff unless you pushed it.

It won’t bring a dime more than any other 80 Mustang,…And the Decals are reproducible. No sense scouring the want ads. No one will know the difference,…..and It won’t matter regardless….No one will care.

But if it’ll make you feel better….Buy an 80 hatch, and get the decals….
Boom!
79-80 Cobra..* Notice the pic of they guys walking past this car…it’s for a reason.

Oregon Pace Car

I have decided to SELL the Mustang. Several reasons. People all around me seem to be dying and I am starting to feel my age. Not pains and all that, but not having the desire to work on the Mustang/other complete rebuild. Painting is fun. Plus I REALLY HATE THE PAINT I USED. Each time I...
