4.10's Don't fear the gear!!!

Maybe I've been around too long, but I can't seem to wrap my brain around having to shift into 5th at only about 105 - 108 mph with a 5 speed... if you are dumb enough to be one of those street racers you'll be having your asses handed to you by Mom in her family sedan, it seems that those things are getting stronger and stronger every year.
I'm sure 411's are a lot of fun, but no thanks I'll keep my 373's.
They work out almost perfect for me, I trap out at around 115 mph, redline at around 122 in 4th. Almost perfect, all I need is 40-50 more hp and I should hit it perfectly.

I could hardly agree more.

I'm in the "4.10 wish I'd gone 3.90 or 3.73 club" for that reason.

It works out well in the 1/8th mile with 4.10's but with spray it's going to be awfully close in the 1/4 without raising the limiter.

Also, if/when you get the itching to stretch the legs on an open, empty road, it gets boring once you hit 5th.

Geebuz how fast do you guys go on the road?

Last 2 posters obviously have a power adder but on a N/A PI 4.6, 4.10s are pretty much the norm for almost 10 years now.

Not that this topic hasn't been beaten to death, but...

I've had both a N/A GT and currently have a Vortech'd Bullitt.

Well, generally not too fast. We do have a few roads that at certain times are 100% empty. No houses, roads on or off, center divider, etc... it's kind of got the reputation of a local autobahn. I don't make it a habit by any means but I've blasted down it a few times in the past.

Don't get me wrong, 4.10's are a very, very fun gear for an N/A car and even with a 100 shot they REALLY make it fun to drive assuming it hooks. For a strictly bolt on, or cammed and bolt on car they are perfect if you don't mind turning higher RPM on the highway.

If you don't mind raising your limiter and spinning the motor higher under boost/nitrous then it will still work in the 1/4. But since you aren't suppose to spray in 5th gear, and 115mph or so is the limit in 4th with 4.10's, the fun stops kind of soon for someone who races or has an opportunity to open the car up for a long stretch.

Just a personal preference from my standpoint to have 3.90's at the tallest in my car. Part of that is because the T45 has a low 5th gear as well, so that doesn't help cruising.

I have a 5-speed N/A and I'm really glad I switched to 4.10s (had 3.73s and I'm in the mode where I want to shave every little bit off my ET without going to a blower).

I think I drive more aggresively now though, since the car just seems to surge forward on every gear shift now!!!

If this is for a N/A car that will never break 400hp then 4.10 are ok in a manual car. If you make more then that and are not running a real slick then 1st is a waste. I spend my whole 1st gear just trying to keep it gripping. Then in second you can get on it all the way. I say what good are 4.10s if I cant use first. With slicks, not radials, at the track I can get in it pretty hard. So for the track they are good. Not sure what you are going for, but street tires are uselss with even 3.73s. If I get another gear it will be real close to stock or at least less than 3.73.
For refrence I have a forged stroker on a 200shot.

4.30's Coming soon, I dont know why so many people are so scared of gears... 4.10 is a minimum in any N/A GT if you ask me. Even if i had a PD blower id still go 4.10's, sounds like a good time to me
