Just did the install on Monday. Love them. Wednesday night wifey is in the back seat with the baby and she then asks, "whats that wooring sound." I lower the radio and hear a faint buzz coming from the rear of the car. (she doesn't know about the gears). I tell her its the tires rubbing on bad pavement

Well today I am driving to work and the wooring is now much much louder, to the point I can hear it over the radio full blast, and it is now accompanied by a buzz saw sound.

Well needless to say the guy who did the work said he will fix the problem but he does not understand why the sound would progresively worsen. It should have either been making a sound or not, this issue is more common with used gears, not new. So now I am not going to have my car till monday

So what the crap, did this guy do a mickey mouse job on my car or is this a common problem?

Common problem with setting up the gears ing 05+ Mustangs. Even though the diff, gears and everything inside the rear end are the same as every other 8.8 on the market, people are having problems with the gear whine.

Mine is at the dealer now getting a NEW rear end because they put two new sets of 3.55s in and it didn't fix the whineing problem. They've had the car for almost two weeks now.

If you are using ford racing gearsets you should know that there are 2 different sets out there.
The first one being the M-4209-G410A this is the more expensive set and are far less prone to whining. they have the Ford logo stamped on the back of the ring gear.

The second set which are less expensive are the M-4209-G410M these have a backcut on the ring gear and the pinion depth scribed on the end of the pinion.
These were manufactured for Ford by Motive. These are known to make noise.

I went through this hell last spring and since I supplied the gears I had to pay a second time to get the other ones installed.

At the time the G410A was discontinued and I luckily found a set from a friends race car which only had 100 passes on them when he switched to 4.30's

After a bunch of problems they re-released the G410A.

The G410A also comes with the crush sleeve, pinion nut and shims so just at that it's worth the extra money.

If you do a google search you will see that this problem has been around for the last year or so

www.americanmuscle.com sells both sets. There is an $80 difference between the 2 sets. I would gladly pay that to know I was getting genuine Ford parts that have been found to work better in this case.

Ok, I got a call on Saturday at 12:18 pm that my stang was ready. I got all giddy like a little girl at her first strip club and told the guy that I was on my way. He told me no can do, that he was leaving for the day. I told him to park the car outside of his shop and that I would swing by to get her shortly, he said no that there was a $280 bill. I ask for what ( I am on the phone with the guys assistant) he tells me that I needed to replace something in the rear end(basicly saying that verbatim)

So I was like, now is when you call me? Basicly to let me know that my car is ready, I can't get it and there is another bill? The guys was like, look I was just letting you know that you can come by Monday morning and she is ready. Man I was so pissed. I don't know but lets see what they tell me tomorrow.

I have set up many rear gears and have never had a whine issue.

Doesn't anyone check back lash and drive and coast patterns anymore?

He could have also used an impact to tighten the pinion nut/crush sleeve which would cause the the bearing to prematurely fail.

I had the misfortune of having a "local yokal" do my gears.
He charged me each time I came in to have the whine fixed.
I paid nearly twice what the Ford dealership would have charged me to do it right the first time... and I've got whiny gears.

Bottom line: Make sure the installation tech has a lot of experience with the new stang.

Hope the wife don't find out what that noise is and what it cost us.

Yeah they actually made it seem like it was my fault, they said that they had to replace the bearings and that they never seen it that bad before not even when they blew their rearend at the track. So they kept telling me to drive the car easy for a little while.

Well that was Monday and I still have a little whine especially coming down from about 60 to about 40 mph in gear. I really havent gotten on it because I am scared to break something, I dont want to shift hard or even come near redline. I kinda just want to make sure it lasts till next week atleast before I get crazy.

Now the wifey was a close call, given the fact that she was giving me the lift to go pick up my car. The next day she was asking me what had happened to the car that it was making that sound, what did they change. I said that the x pipe was rubbing on the drive shaft they just had fitment issues. She lectured me for about half an hour about how I always mess up my cars, I always waste money, blah, blah, blah. I told her to leave me alone that I was playing gears of war online and that I didn't want to have to slap her while online. She walked away respectfully.

YEP! Show me a whining rear axle, and in almost every case I'll show you one that was not set up correctly.

The Ford logo FRPP gears are a better buy because in almost all cases they can be put in place with the same shim set that was used on the original gears and the pattern and backlash will be correct. If you buy cheap gears they can still be set up correctly but it will usually take several stages of assembly/disassembly to get everything right.

In almost all cases, a whining rear axle is due to carelessness or incompetence in assembly/setup.
