Hey guys! I just found this site and I'm hoping you can help me out. I'm looking at my next big round of mods and I'm trying to decide if I should go with a stroker kit or just a stock displacement forged bottom end. If you have any experience/ advice I would love to hear it

Here's my current set-up:
1996 Cobra
2.2 kenne bell @ 10 psi
o/r x-pipe and magnapacks
255 lph bbk fuel pump
42 # injectors
FRPP 4.10's
MGW short throw
+ some visual stuff.

When I do the engine rebuild I'm also planning on the following:
centerforce clutch
Billet steel flywheel
dual core aluminum radiator
Meth injection
Kenne bell 12x4" intake filter
FRPP 9mm wires
wideband AFR
lots of guages
14-15# blower pulley

That's about it. Sorry for the long post. I appreciate any help. Also, if you have a suggestion for a good throttle body and MAF that would be great

i'd go back with stock. mine is a new standard block with stock stroke and it is doing just fine.

it is cheaper also

Most of the kits I've been looking at are within a couple hundred dollars between stroked and stock. Other than price, what makes you lean away from stroked?

I would skip the stroker ID and go straight to a forged buttom end and go with a big bore or a .030 over bore.

Sorry I probably should have been more specific in my first post. Both kits would be completely forged. Can you guys tell me why you prefer stock over stroker?

For one, the geometry of the engine goes to crap when you stroke it. The 4.6 is pretty much square, so when you stroke it, you end up with a longer stroke than a bore diameter and that's not ideal for making power. Of course, the 5.0 stroker won't be as bad as a stock 5.4.

Also, it tends to put the piston pin into the ring pack, and the ring pack too high on the piston for durability. I don't know if this is a problem on the 4.6, but these are things to consider.

You won't notice enough of a difference in power to warrant paying more for a stroker with a KB setup.

Thanks for the input guys What MAF and throttle body would you recommend? Also, where would you get the forged rotating assembly? I've been looking at the kits from Livernois and Summit...

Thanks again

I've been running a Moduar Powerhouse billet stroker shortblock for 3 years with no problems. I went 9.8 with a 2.2 KB and 9.4 with a 2.8 KB. As far as I'm concerned, every little bit helps. I think the stroker is worth about 30 rwhp across the board.

call 3143035195 tell the guy what you wanna do. i was gonna stroke mine but decided not to bc it was only worth about 30 hp with a basicly stock setup. now if your runnig a power adder and good heads its worth more hp.

IF IT WAS WORTH 30 HP ACROSS THE BOARD, I WOULD HAVE DONE IT...THATS A LOT. however, my builder told me that he only sees about 10 rwph withy the stroker. i dont know what is right here but i think it might have helped the bottom eend of a centri power adder car. for the kb blower i wouldnt bother.

That's what it's worth. I did mine when I had a Novi 2000. With the KB, it is still worth it IMHO. For a street car, it's not needed.

N/A, Strokers have been shown to lose about 15 RWHP when using stock heads, cams, intake manifold and the stock compression ratio. In N/A form, they never gain it back.

Now FI cars are a little different. Throw enough boost at them, they will overcome the stock displacement and make more power. I would never put a stroker in my cars however if I did, it would be with a positive displaced blower like a Kenne Bell.

That 30hp is with a blower kit. Either way, the big bore will result in better gains.

So I would be looking at roughly a 30 hp gain with the stroker? Who sells a big bore kit and about what kind of gain do you think that will give? Also, in case you want to know I'm dropping the compression to about 8.5:1.

There is not a lot of places that do Big-Bores. You can get them from Ford Racing, Modular Performance or Renegade Racing.

N/A, the Big-Bore gains 30 RWHP with the stock heads, cams, intake manifold and stock compression over the stock 4.6L. When you start adding parts, the Big-Bore shows better gains than the 4.6L. You could see well over a 100 RWHP gain with a Big-Bore and FI.

I have a N/A Big-Bore and I will say they are not cheap. You are looking at about $1200.00 more to have a Big-Bore than a stock displaced engine and about a $1000.00 more than a Stroker.
