I'm thinking about buying a 1990 4cyl notch to drive to work with.Does anyone know anything about these cars?I know they have 4cyl's but do they get good gas mileage?I drive 90miles a day and its costing me 80 dollars a week so something has to change...........

they dont get good gas milage at all
my 87 4cyl auto hatch got like 19-20 tops, thing was slower than crap
0-60 in 17seconds, on a good day

19-20!!!!!!!!!!Thats not far off from what I'm getting now.I know it's gonna be slow as hell but I was hopeing to save some money.I guess I'll have to start looking at imports or something

ya, those cars were piles, they weren't fuel efficient at all.

I had a '91LX 2.3L for around 4yrs. If memory serves me right it wasn't all that great in terms of gas mileage, I beat on it everyday though. I'm 90% sure my best MPG ever was 28mph, but it was usually in the low to mid 20's which for 113hp wasn't all that great. It was a 5 speed too.

It is hard to jsutify a car based strictly on gas milage... Usually they still end up costing you money.

Remember to include the cost of the car, the insurance, and maintence. then figure out how many miles will go on the better gas milage car vs the mustang (or whatever gets bad milage). Now figure out how much gas each vehicle would use (mils/MPG * Gas price).

so if you look at everythng they usually do not pay off for a long while.

Although on the otherside it saves wear and tear and depreciation on your mustang, but you also lose out on fun to drive miles.

Just my $.02

I drive a 90 LX 2.3 with a 5 speed, 60 miles a day to and from work, and I get right under 30 MPG. Yeah its slow and sucks, but its good on gas. This one doesnt have an AC, so I dont know if that helps a little, but I think it is pretty good on gas compared to the 17-19 i got on my 95GT. Just an insight.

I had a 93 LX hatch 4cyl. It was a great car just the Autos. have a bad tendency for go through torque converters. I went through 4 of them. The 5-speeds are a T-5 and much better. I got great gasmileage out of mine. Apx. 30-32 most of the time. I loved the car and it was about to become a project to swap a 5.0 into but the car got totaled.

I currently have a 1993 LX 2.3L with an automatic. It gets between 30-32 on the highway and averages mid-20s in heavy urban driving.

If you aren't getting high 20s with your 2.3L, it's either way out of tune or it's got other issues.

It's pretty common for these cars to suck ass. I did everything tune-up wise that is possible and it still averaged about 19mpg.

Edit: Mine was an '89 Auto. It's currently sitting with a messed up transmission.

Were the 2.3l engines fuel injected? If so, you might want to look at replacing the fuel injectors. I just replaced them on my '94 V6 (daily driver) at ~162,000 miles, and my gas mileage is definitely up. I was getting 19-20 mpg before the new injectors; I think I gained an extra 1-2 mpg. Have to finish off a couple of tanks before I'm sure. Power's definitely up as well.

They suck. Get an S10 or something, the mileage won't be good, but at least you can use it for something.

Well, whatever they are known for, mine gets great gas mileage, is super reliable, and makes an awesome daily beater.

I think I might buY it and give it a shot.It's a 90 with 75,000 miles with a good body.The guy want $1100 but I think I can get it for $900.My 95 is begging me

My '96 Splash has the 2.3 Lima. (same as Fox 2.3, except intake) It get's AT LEAST 30mpg. It's sitting in my driveway begging for a stroked V8 .....
