Norwalk, CA.
Just read an article about replacing the 5R55S transmission with a 4R70W. The reason is the tq that this tranny can hold and the fact it has clutch packs instead of bands.

Now I have a 86 with a AOD and I was looking for something better than the AOD. I am not going to boost this 5.0 but convert it to MAF with a Cobra intake, E cam and World Products Iron heads. So with this known and the weakness of the AOD, also the fact this 4R70W is a common tranny so finding one wouldnt be hard.

The problem comes from the Electronic portion of this tranny. Can it be converted to non-computer or can a computer be installed in the fox..

Anyone?....

I'd simply get an AOD built.

Otherwise, talk to Mansonozz if you desire. He put a 4R in his Fox III and it was not a simple endeavor as I recall.

I would just build the AOD, and use most of the guts from the 4r70w.
Oh and they both have "A" band, its just that the 4r uses the 2" and the AOD uses the 1.5" its a good upgrade for the aod.

Then why does the article in April 09 Muscle Mustang and Fast Fords state that the 4R uses clutch packs like the TH400 but they are larger. It uses them in the 2-3 and 3-4 transisions....????

I dont care what some magazine says, the 4r has a band for the o/d (3-4) shift just like the AOD. The 4r is nothing more than an updated AOD and has elec shift solnoid.
I have put a few together to know, just put all the updated 4r stuff in the AOD case and go racing with that new low gear.

Anyplace where i can read about this upgrade?

You can put a manual valve body in it. My friend's turbo 95 GT had a 4R70W out of a 3.8 with a Lentech manual valve body, modified drums to hold more clutches, trans brake, worked good in that car. 530+ rwhp, 614 rwtq, 3700ish race weight, no issues with the tranny. Also he locked the converter in third, picked it up some mph at the track and made it sail on the top side on the street.
