Hey guys i wanna put a four valve in my notch, right now i dont have 2grand to pick up a 96-98 cobra motor. My question is can i throw a mark8 4valve in it and be able to use a cobra 96-98 harness? If i go with the mark 8 i plan to swap to a cobra intake etc. Also i plan on removing the smog stuff and imrc plates

thanks

I am not sure about the harness, but I would bet that it would work. It is the same motor for the most part.

Also, remember that the MKVIII has the nodular iron crank instead of the Cobra steel one. It would probably be a good idea to put in the Cobra crank and forged internals along with a Cobra oil pan with the windage tray.

The Cobra's crank is the only forged part of the early Cobra engine. The rods and the pistons are the same ones found in the Mark VIII. Not 100% sure on the design of the Cobra oil pan, but the Mark VIII pan holds and extra quart of oil (up at the front of the pan) in comparison to the stock 2V pan and does have a built in windage tray....so if there's room for it, you might want to leave it on there.

The intake manifold on the Mark VIII is different than the design of the early Cobra, so be prepared to do a little mixing and matching of wire ends and vacuum lines...and a custom intake tube will be a necessity.

I don't see an issue with spinning the Mark VIII engine with the nodular iron crank. Ford went with the nodular iron unit in the Mark VIII's and the Auto equipped Mach 1's because the auto didn't have the RPM range that the 5-speed does. But as long as you’re not revving it to the moon, you'll not have a problem. You won't make any power past 6,200RPM anyway, so you really have no reason to spin it much higher than that. Flywheel is different too between the Cobra and the Mark VIII if I'm not mistaken. So you'll need to make sure you've got the right one.
