I have a 69 Mustang, 63K with bad valves, good compression. I also have good 5.0 heads from a 89 Crown Vic (roller motor) that Id like to slap on the 69 motor. Can this happen with the 69 cam and pushrods? Will I need to swap rockers or anything else? Please let me know if I have everything between the two engines other than gaskets. I'm not after performance just a driver for the wife and if I have the parts on hand all is well with my world!

Thanks!

You don't want to use those Vic heads on anything. Those are the E6SE's. Good for torque below 2500 rpms, but they'll cost you horsepower. The valves are shrouded and the chambers deeper and have more volume than your 69 heads. That'll cost you in the compression ratio.

Find some E7 heads - they typically go almost free around here (or maybe $50 if they are in really good shape), or buy a pair of GT40 heads off a '96 Exploder. I can't answer your question about whether everything will fit. The typical advice I see is to ALWAYS mock up the engine and check everything.

But will they work with the stock 69 cam, lifters and pushrods? I don't care about HP, and are the rockers adjustable?

Other option, using the 5.0 in the Stang and putting a carburetor and AOD on it? The harmonic balancer and pulley to convert it back to 69 belts and accessories? Thanks in advance.
I don't want to go the EFI route.

If youre talking about using a late model Mustang 5.0, youll need a late model 58oz dampner too. I dont think there were any 58oz 3 bolt dampners made, so youll need a pulley too. As for putting a carb on the late model engine, itll work great. Having the AOD should make a big difference too, depending on what rear gear you have. If you already have a 2.79 or so, and dont feel like changing it, just stick with whatever trans you have.

OK, not a Mustang motor but a 1989 5.0 Crown Vic, close enough for what we're talking about. How would I change that front pulley to use an old style V belt if I go the engine swap mode? (see swapping the heads sounds so much easier)!

Thanks to all you guys for your expertise.

You could use the whole crown vic engine, just swap the old accessories/drives onto it, including the timing cover and water pump, then find a new crank pulley. Either way you wind up with the same chokey heads.

From what I understand the early 351 heads out perform any of the 302/5.0 heads due to bigger ports and valves. (except the Boss heads). Plus you get a smaller combustion chamber that will give you a little more compression. Around 74 or so the 351W used the same head as the 302, big combustion chamber and smaller valves. If this is so wouldn't that be a better option?

Aren't the 5.0 motors 50oz imballance and the earlier motors 28oz imballance ?

There are ballancers made for late model motors that are setup for 3 bolt pullys.

Personally I'd just run the serpentine setup.

Yea, they'll work, and no, the rockers aren't adjustable. Neither are your 69's. The Vic motor was rated at 150 hp. You could give it help by swapping on a set of Cobra 1.7 roller rockers and dual exhaust. With that, you're looking at about 175 hp. There are 50 oz balancers thru some classic Stang vendors to use the earlier accessories on a late model motor.

check your casting numbers i have worked on alot of Vic's that had E7 heads so look at them and see first. If they are E7 heads they will work with your current cam/lifter setup and you will need a 6.800 pushrod.

Easy way to check the heads is look at the lower front corner of the passenger side head, next to the valve cover, the E6SE's have an "S" here, E7TE's have a "T". GT40P's have a "P" All the Vic/large Merc/Lincoln 5.0's I've seen all had the E6SE heads, but anything is possible. Seen a couple truck 5.0's with the E6SE's too.

Thats what I meant, I knew 58oz didnt sound right, but I was tired. What had the 50oz, 3 bolt dampner? Thats news to me.

Its not a stock part to my knowledge but a lot of the aftermarket ones come in 3 hole or are drilled/taped for both

You do not need to change the balancer when changing the heads. They are completely unrelated.

He didn't ask if he needed to change the ballancer to change the heads, he wanted to know if he needed to change it to run a V-belt setup.
