302 into a nissan 240SX

hey guys i'm not of the mustang world but i am a ford guy. however, i currently am restoring this:

instead of the usual (easy) turbo route and because of my specific goals im looking for good solid NA power. i checked out the LS1 and due to price and Size it appears to be ill-fated for my car, however, the 302 fits cause i've seen it done AND i love the heck out of that motor.

so i'm here trying to find block/tranny dimensions, weights, and pretty much any kind of information i can possible absorb from these forums to aid me in my build.

so... resources?

Now thats definitely original; a 5.0L S13 240SX. I like the JDM tail light lenses too. You probably already know about SR20DET swaps, but that KA24DE can really make some torque with boost . I know, get a Titan V8.....

Anyway....I used to have a page of engine weights in my bookmarks, but my computer is a disaster area. I do know that an iron-headed 302 weighs about 480lbs. I dont know the dimensions, but I have a longblock on a stand I guess I could measure.

A 1986-93 H.O. engine weighs 540 pounds assembled, a 1996 4.6 SOHC weighs 504 pounds and a 1996 4.6 DOHC (aluminum block) weighs 460 pounds. I got this from my book: The Official Ford Mustang 5.0 Technical Reference & Performance Handbook. You should definitely get one for yourself its got all kinds of info on everything 5.0.

i found the weight of a block minus accessories and manifolds (419#'s)

pretty much the same weight as my iron block 2.4L 4 banger. sure, i could turbo it and make power but just power isn't my goal. i want NA power.

and yeah, if you could grab some quick measurements from all the important areas of the motor i'd appreicate it (oilpan to intake mani, head across the block to head, back of the block to the crank pulley etc etc).

thanks fellas, if this goes well i'll be throwin one in my ranger too

Well, I dont have a damper nor pulley on yet, but I hope what I got will help.

Across valvecovers: 20"
Oil pan to top of (carb)intake: 22"
Oil pan to top of carb: 28.5"
Water pump snout to bacl of block: 29.5"

The oil filter sticks out another 2.5-3" on the driver's side, BTW.

I love this idea!! I think the 240SX is a nice looking car.

The oil filter sticking out can be easily solved with a remote filter kit. The biggest draw back to a 5.0/302 swap is usually the over all length of the engine. With the Explorer timing cover, water pump and correct pulleys you can shorten the over all length of the engine to 27.5".

Ford lists the 302 as 20.75" tall and 18.75 wide. That's bottom of oil pan to top of valve covers and outer edge of valve cover to outer edge of valve cover.

I would go with a mexican block 5.0 L if you are looking to make SERIOUS power because these are stronger blocks and won't crack under extreme power...regular 302 can probably safely handle 450-460 rwhp and after that you are on borrowed time...go with a mexican block I bet you could safely make a few hundred more...that is not to say that an everyday 302 won't make 600 rwhp cuz it will but it will crack...

I was looking at a 240SX a couple weeks ago that had the OE engine and turbo thing going on and the engine compartment in them is quite generous. I think you'll find that it'll fit quite nicely. Keep us posted.

If this guy fit this in here, im sure you could fit a 302 in yours.. im not sure if the size is exact, but its gotta be close from your car to this one.

You can buy a kit for that LS1 swap. And if it fits, a 302 should definitly fit.

there is no S13 ls1 kit and the fact that 302's are everywhere makes it a much more economical decision.

the goal is good na power without making the car front heavy, not necessarilly any particular V8.

nothing more than 400rwhp/tq.

I thought they shared the same basic chassis?

Still a cool project.

wow! what does one of those weigh? give it a basic white paintjob and it would be one hell of a sleeper.

It's kinda funny a 5.0 into an Import swap thread should pop up. I have been kickign around a similar project. Their is a 1st generation RX7 close to my home that's about as nice as one can be that I can buy for about maybe $4000 at most (probably coudl get it for $3500). And these cars are perfect for the 5.0 swap. There's even a company that sells a complete swap kit for like less than $900. You use eveything in the kit plus the factory style shorty headers and it literally drops in with no fabrication needed other than a custom exhaust.

All said and done it weighs in at less than 2500 lbs. Cheap. Silly power to weight capability. Sure to be a fun ride. I'd like to do it.
