5.0 throttle cable in 66

So the throttle cable is hooked to the throttle body, and the other end (pedal end) is not connected to anything at this point, correct?

You are just pulling on the pedal end of the cable, and can't get the throttle open more than 1/2 way?

I just wanted to make sure I understand the problem correctly.

Is it possible that the linkage on the throttle body is running into something and stopping it from opening all the way?

Are you using the correct throttle cable bracket for a 89-93 mustang? If you are using the wrong bracket, and the cable housing is not far enough from the throttle body, then you would not be able to pull the throttle all the way open.

Any chance you installed the throttle cable backwards? Pedal end in throttle body? Don't know if its even possible, but its a thought.

Can you rotate the throttle all the way open by hand WITH the throttle cable hooked up? I don't really know what to suggest... I took a picture of my stock throttle setup in case that helps somehow. Pics not great since there's not a lot of room in there.

There is definitely no adjustment on a stock throttle cable.

I have a 1970 mustang 5.0 FI resto-mod -- I used a 1990's Thunderbird 3.8 v-6 throttle cable to fit right -- You can also check with www.ronmorrisperformance.com to get the right cable. FYI I have my cable hooked up to the outer slotted area of the throttle bracket that you have left blank in this photo and I have NEVER had a problem with it - just bolted it in with a small nut, bolt and washer to keep it in place. I have also heard you need a 1970 mustang gas pedal set up (available at every Mustang parts house around) to make it fit right on an early model like that.

Try putting the cable in the other hole on the bracket to see if it helps - the angle may be just what you need - and YES it does need to open "all the way" on the butterfly and the spring should not bind when it does.
