My 02 3.8 5 speed with 100,000 miles started making a loud intermittent closely spaced noise today when moving in reverse. Looking for ideas as to what the problem is. What is the going price for a used trans vs repairing the one I have? Anyplace on the internet where I could find an exploded view of the trans? Thanks

Thanks for he response. It has 100,000 miles. The noise is a low growl. The only time it does it is when it is in reverse and the clutch is engaged. The noise is coming from between the front seats. I am convinced it is in the tran. Thanks Doug

If I were to guess I'd say it's the throwout bearing. At least it's making noise in reverse only!

I would just watch it and see if it gets worse or changes. If it's something with the reverse gears, the worst that will happen will be that you lose reverse- at least you'll be able to get it to a shop if that happens.

mustang trans problem

So Ok I decided to have the reverse fixed by a shop. Replaced the shaft whic has the reverse gears on it. Reverse works fine. Since driving about a 100 miles it has started jumping out of first and second gear. The shop has the trans apart now and can not find anything wrong with it. Only jumps out when down shifting. Any suggestions?

My 2002 5 speed 3.8 had the same problem at the same mileage. The shaft reverse was on was totally wasted. The repair shop replaced the shaft and reverse worked fine. Unfortunately it than began to jump out of 1st and 2nd. The shop took it apart two or three times and could never find a problem. Replaced with a used trans for $700.00. Everything works great now. Good Luck.
