What is your budget? Do you want to do it with a power adder or with cubic inches? Is this a street car, a race car, or what?

500rwhp is going to be dangerous on a stock 302 block. Maybe you should do a 351 based engine.

Large bore (4.125) Dart block stroker with some form of boost. AFR 205 or 225 heads, big intake(Victor, Spyder, TF box, etc), custom cam. Should be around 600+rwhp easy.

My friend had a twin turbo Z06 making something like 600rwhp at low boost. Maxed around 800 I think. He sold it and bought a stock C6 Z06.

That is pretty much the formula I used. Had my Trick Flow heads ported and new valves, valvetrain so they flow the same or a little more than the AFR 205 heads.a
15 lbs of boost got 668 to the wheels.
Tame enough to drive anwhere.
Can pull up next to the police on the street and pass them without any hassles as long as I keep the RPM's low around them.

+1….although if he has the money, I’d say go with a dart based setup.

What I absolutely would NOT do is spend any money on punching out the stock block to a 347 and adding boost to it. There are far cheaper/easier ways to get 500rwhp on a stock block.

In all reality, a simply h/c/I setup along with a turbo and ~8psi would get you there….but again, how long it lives for is a crap shoot (and one that I’m currently winning).

i'm with millhouse here. you can get a decent h/c/i setup and put a turbo on there and be making that much. its all in how long and safe you want it to be. safer takes more money. if you want the room to grow, i would go with a 351 dart block stroked and bored out with the aforementioned parts. from there add boost at your leisure.

So, I already have a v-2 on my 302 but I'm looking into getting a 347 shortblock from fordstrokers.com. I already have a set of victor jr heads with 1.7rr's and a trickflow r series upper/lower intake.

How much boost from a supercharger do you think it would take to push around 500rwhp?Also how long does a stock block or possibly the early casting 68-75 upgrade usually last with pushing it this hard? If it matters I will be running either the Mr.Freeze or Snow meth injection.

sorry for the threadjack, but maybe my questions will help you too.

Again, if it's a stock block...dont waste your money. While the earlier blocks tend to be a bit more stout...they are still not safe at those horsepower levles.

As for boost numbers go, it's going to take very little boost on a 347 setup to get to block splitting horsepower. If you take a look at my sig, I'm running only 8psi of boost on a stock shortblock with a simple h/c/i setup. Imagine what 47ci of extra displacement would do....especially considering I'm alredy pushing it.

my plan for the 347 was ordering a short block from CHP. afr heads. i am undecided on the cam at this point. do you all beleive that it would handle the boost?

So what block is a good affordable block to have woody at fordstrokers build off of for around 550-600 rwhp?

Again, if it's a stock based block your better off with a simple rebuild of a full stocker. It will not be able to reliably handle the horsepower and torque you plan to put it through. When the block splits, it is possible that the entire rotating asembly would be scrap...even with a main girdle.

With affordability in mind, the only reliable block IMHO would be a 351w. It should be able to handle those power levels reliably and leave a bit of room to grow. Another option would be a mexican block. They are known to be able to handle a bit more power than stock. Both are going to be more expensive than a stock block based assembly.....and the 351w requires a larger truck lower intake (to accommodate the taller deks) if you plan on running a EFI upper/lower.

TURBO! it'll get you to 500 or over hp easily. boost is the way to if you more power. but acoarse its more $$$ and time. for the block, i think the dart would be convienent.

search posts by S351Saleen77. he has a vortec t-trim powered 408w that is putting down over 650rwhp

with the parts you have and wanting something that is decently reliable/affordable i would go with a 351w stroked to a 408, use the heads you have, if they make a 351w lower for the intake you already have get just a lower and use that.if not i would use a trick flow r box or victor jr intake. and then stick your blower on it. and of course get a custom cam to match the whole setup

that should put out over 500rwhp and later on you can switch the s-trim for a t-trim. this is wat i was really trying to do but life has thrown me some curve balls and my money and time is being spent elsewhere.

EDIT:my bad i saw fasterthanthem's post and thought he was the original poster. but none the less this is my way to get reliable 500rwhp with some massive torque too boot

The only reason I didn't look into 351w blocks was because I didn't think my V-2 would fit on it? I thought the kit I had would only work with 302 blocks.

Would it fit just fine on a 351w with say the trickflow r series for the 5.8?

What else is needed BTW, just headers correct?

use the same front end brackets on both motors. i havent heard of anyone having problems with the fitment. parchisi is currently running a more emissions friendly 408w with afr185 and a (i believe)94-95 procharger, and is producing a potent 530rwhp and 520rwt and he is using the trickflow r non box into on his monster.

headers are needed, truck or aftermarket 5.8 dizzy, intake, depending on block you will most likely need retro-fit lifters.you can use a flat tappet but it just wont be as effiecient as the hydraulic roller.(although parchisi is using a flat tappet cam and it is working out very nicely).with the hood you have you should be ok with clearance.oil pan, i've heard you can use a trucks but i just bought a swap oil pan for a mustang. it will be a different balance so a new flywheel and balancer is a must.351w and old 302 are 28oz balance new 302s are 50oz. i believe you can have your internals balnced to anything you want though with the stroker but i'm not positive.

this is all off the top of my head that i can think of about the differences of a 302 and 351w. pretty much on anything else just think wat would be good on a 302....then double it and it will be ok on your 408w. but just the amount of torque these motors are capable of and the beating these blocks will take is wat drives me to finish my 351w build. even though i have caught myself thinking i could just have a mild h/c/i already and spray my way to some good track times. but thats not the way i want to go i want something with a little more grunt to it.

Mexican block will take this all day. Jim (Woody) just shipped my Mexican 347 out to me last week. I'm very happy with his service.

does he keep these blocks in stock or are they as rare as the 96 roller 351w.
