High rpm power drop

I was wondering if this is normal in 95 5.0 stangs? When I take it to redline there is a noticable drop off in power past 5krpms up to the 6krm redline. When you hit 5krpms it would rev much slower. I thought it was faster to just shift at 5k because it was revving so slowly.

I was wondering if this is normal? I am used to driving Hondas where they would rev quickly.

Thanks

Welcome!

It's not unusual to have power start dropping off around there on stock 5.0's.

It can also be something like an ignition issue.

Good luck.

Big difference between hondas and 5.0s. If you're bone stock, it's pretty much normal to feel that, but if you have some mods, then you have a problem, depending on the mods.

PS. good to see you saw the light. j/k

welcome!

if your car is stock, then yes, the heads and intake are too restrictive to allow enough air through at those high rpms.

the most restrictive piece is the lower intake.

that is why replacing the intake is often one of the first thing people do

Yes it has a stock engine, just a flomaster exhaust.

Untill I get heads, intake, full exhaust, will it be faster to shift right before the dropoff?

Yes, shifting right in the 4800-5000rpm is as good as it gets in a stock setup. 4.10s will get you close to the optimal power band area in the rpm curve at the top of the track. That is until a supercharger/turbo/NOS enter the equation.

Yep, this is normal! Hondas may keep up but only because they are lighter. 2800 pounds or less depending on the car. PLUS your stock stang is majorly de-tuned. It drives well but Needs H/C/I..etc to be using its potential. Any honda running as restricted as the Mustang would be putting out like..80HP, lol. Just FYI if people ask your V8 sounds so good but only avg fast. Good luck and welcome!

Great, thanks for the advice everyone.

Any good suggestions on where to get the parts from? (Heads and Intake) Order online or would it be better to order them locally?

I've had real good luck with ebay. Summitracing, BuyFordRacing.com, Blueovalindustries, and The Mustang Depot are all resources I have used in the past without any issues. I only use the local parts stores for gaskets, bolts, fluids and the like.

So by intake do you mean a cold air such as the BBK one for about $160? Or do I need to do manifold? I have also heard there are upper and lower intakes?

Sorry I'm really new to stangs

Don't mean to be an ass, but it is HEADS/CAM/INTAKE.(notice there is no 's' in cam) Whenever we, mustang guys, speak of "INTAKE" we mean the upper and lower intakes on the motor. The "intake" you speak of is called "CAI aka Cold Air INDUCTION". Just a little info now that you're rolling with the big dawgs.

I can see where the confusion comes from - guys tend to call CAI's: Cold Air Intakes. I myself call it a CAI (if aftermarket) or the intake tube if stock. Confusing.

For further clarity, we really only have one intake - the lower. The upper intake (with the 5.0L plaque on it) is actually a plenum.

If you're not planning on doing a whole ton at first, I'd look into having Tom Moss port your [bottleneck] lower intake. He does really nice work and the price is right IMHO.

Good luck.

I was going to state that the upper is a plenum, but I didn't want to throw anything else at him.

Why not, you still have a few wrenches left in your box.

I think we need pics of the new ride. Have to make sure it's not all riced up you know.
