5th gear syncro going bad?

My transmission sometimes grinds when going into 5th gear above 4000 rpm. It only happens sometimes and only when under power. I have not had a chance to pull the Pro 5.0 shifter to check the stops, because I am replacing it with an MGW next week, and I am going to drain and replace the tranny fluid at that time.I also plan to replace the clutch cable and install a UPR firewall adjuster and aluminum quadrant when I do the rest. Do you think it is the syncro, the stops, or what? Help me out!

it sounds like the syncro on 5th. go buy a t-5 rebuid kit, and a video from mustangs unlimited. The thing was sooo easy to rebuild it was crazy. My car shifts so nice, i cant believe it, soo much better than when i bought it with 70k. i would do it if i was you, you just follow step by step as a guy on a video does a rebuild!

Man I was hoping there would be an easier fix. So the same thing was happening to you? I've seen the kits, but I figured it'd be a major PITA, and was hoping to avoid pulling the tranny if possible. Thanks for the reply. Anyone else have the same troubles?

What are you doing with that pro 5.0 shifter you are removing?

mine does the same thing. normal driving----shifts into 5th fine.
stretch 4th into the 5000 rpm range and 5th grinds going into gear.

i just posted the other day about this but mine happens going into 3rd gear. i only have >23k miles on the car though. i tried just adjusting the cable but haven't driven it since. a guy at steeda said maybe try a quadrant but it could be a syncro. i don't know.
