When I switch from my current t-5 to the 86 TC t5 my speedo drive gear
will go from a 6 tooth to a 7 tooth. Is it going to be off enough that it
should be changed?

if i recall correctly 1 tooth = 2 mph. i dont think it will make much difference. I am running a the 3.45 rear end speedo gear in my car with 3.73's its makes it about 4 mph too fast but im used to it now.

If I remember correctly, the 7-tooth drive gear is for the 140 mph speedo, or something along those lines.

yes, it will make a big difference.
You will need to go from you 20 tooth, to a 23 tooth driven gear. As I recall, the 23 tooth is not avaiblable from ford, but there is someone that makes em.
Otherwise, your speedo will be off by 14%.

then your set. I forgot that there were no manual transmissions with a 6 tooth drive gear. I bet they are both 6 tooth. Unless your speedo is off, or you have funky tires, you have a 7 tooth right now.

The site is correct. My tranny is from a TC and has a 6 tooth drive gear. www.hanlonmotorsports.com has a little calculator to figure out your driven gear, and it's pretty accurate. Gives figures both for 6-tooth and 7-tooth drive gears.
