I recently purchased a '65 fastback that had been wrecked in the front, but the rest of the car is in pretty good shape. Someone started to repair the front by cutting out the radiator support, inner fender panels, etc., etc. which were discarded (idiots) and so the car has no VIN number, and it was sold to me with a bill of sale. Does anyone know where I could buy a 65/66 fastback that is a basket-case, but still has a clear title? Thanks!

Where are you located? Different state may have different solutions. But I believe there is a VIN number somewhere else on the car (besides the door plate). Do you have any pics of what's left?

I'm in Kansas. From my understanding, there should be a VIN number stamped on the inner fender panels on both the drivers side and passenger side, but since both of them were damaged in the crash, they were cut out and thrown away. I was hoping to find something with a title, so I could transfer all of the good parts over, or maybe cut the front off and splice in a new front from a donor car with a title. At any rate, the 1/2 that I have is too nice not to fix up. Sorry I don't have any pics--no digital camera.

No door tag? Does the car still have carpet in it? Sometimes a build sheet is under there. Should be able to verify the door tag with that if one exists. I've been told there are a couple of other places to get a number, but I'm not sure of their location.
Any tag on the car or way to trace a PO from before the people you bought it from?

The thing is, you really want to find a fastback donor if you can, as the VIN identifies if it's a coupe, convertible, or fastback. Is the clear title important, or is a salvage title okay? Is it possible to register it as a kit car in Kansas? What is your intention? Sell? Keep? Nice stock driver? Restomod? Full on race car?

If it has a door tag there are place that sell inner fenders that will stamp a new vin code for yea. I also have a junk yard close to my dads with about 4 fastbacks in it that you could but for 200 bucks. One might even be an A code.

Nope, no door tag either. I'm pretty sure that the door on it was damaged in the crash, becuase the one that's on there now is blue, and the rest of the car is red. I checked under the carpet--no luck. I'm planning on doing some variation of a restomod. I've got a 347 stroker all ready to drop in, I just need a front end, the inner fender panels and a title to put in on the road. Thanks again for everyone's help.

What part of Kansas are you in? I can look around here in central OK, I know the guy that owns Mustang Parts of Oklahoma, he's got a bunch of cars he parts out, but I'm not sure any have a title with them. But you could file for a lost title too.

I have a door tag from a 64.5 coupe, but that won't really do you any good.

No old owners registration, or inspection reciept or anything?

Man, I'm thinking there was another VIN on a frame rail under the car or something.

Might hit VMF too and ask for another VIN location beside the aprons. I'll ask on the FE forum. Mustangs and More is another place to ask. Those and this site are probably the most accessed vintage mustang site I know of.

I'm around the Wichita area. I've seen the pics of the cars on the Mustang Parts of Oklahoma website--they sure do have a lot of cars! That's incredible that you know the guy that owns it--I appreciate you checking with him to see if anything he's got has a title. I've tried to locate the last person with a title to the vehicle, but it appears like the thing has changed hands many times over the past several years without a title, so that has pretty much been a deadend. I've learned my lesson though--don't buy it unless it has a clear title--NO MATTER how cheap it is! ......what a pain. Thank you again for all of your help.

Doc Voodoo-- I sent you an email in regards to the (4) fastbacks that you have. I've been having some problems with my email, so please let me know if you did not receive it. Thank you for your help.

Mod at the early mustang forum at mustangs and more says theres one on the rear framerail. He works for a Ford dealership and is a Super Stock racer with a K-code coupe, so I'm guessing he'd know. Now where on the rear framerail, he didn't say, but that'll give you a start. Original VIN is better than a replacement one IMO though.
