65 Drip Rail Removal

Can anyone tell me how to remove the drip rails? I have removed the inner trim piece that holds the weatherstrip and also the sandwich trim piece that bridges the gap between the drip rail and the weatherstrip trim. Now for the rails themselves. I believe they're just pinched on or something but I'd like to know before I start prying.

Also, during my teardown I removed the large rubber gasket that sits right on top of the upper radiator support. The thing was held on with factory staples which went through the metal on the rad support. Must have been industrial strength staples. How do you re-install that gasket? Re-staple the new one or ??? If you re-staple it, what kind of staples are they?

They hook at the top and clip at the bottom. To remove, gently lever the bottom edge outward.

I removed my rails on my 65 coupe. I did it when I replaced the roof. For you I would recommend doing it a section at a time. Say cut off a foot of the rail and weld the seam. Because once you cut the rail all the way off your roof is no longer attached to the car except by the welds around the front and rear windshield.
I welded mine but I also bent a piece of sheet metal to go over the seam to give a better edge than grinding it and trying to get a strait line. Here is a pic of how I bent it and I made it so the window rubber molding will hide the seam on the bottom. There is also a pic during installation.

Thanks Tony. I'm just talking about the trim strip though. Tricky little bugger. I can't see the pic of what you did but I'd like to see tyhe finished look. Can you post?

2+2 GT - once again you know your stuff. Tried it....worked great.
Any suggestions for the gasket on the rad support?

Use a staple gun? Or, use the industrial staples and try to line up the old holes and manually work the staple through, maybe coax it with a hammer and bend the legs in underneath.
My inner 1/4 window felts were stapled in and the new kit came with staples. I ended up working the staples through by hand and finished it that way.

CHEAP T0OL FOR TRIM REMOVING

This is what I use for the removal of the gutter trim. Just apply self adhesive thin wheather strip rubber so that you won't scratch the trim and it works like a charm.Use the bottle side, not the can side.
