Hello everyone! I'm new to the site and really enjoy reading the forums on here. Now I'm asking for your help from people that KNOW mustangs.
We have a 65 coupe with a rebuilt 302 that was running great. After a show in the fall of '10, the car suddenly lost it's fire after being parked and wouldn't restart. I have tested the coil and have 12v going to the coil and coming out of the coil. 12v are coming out of the end of the coil wire to the cap. But I have no signal in my tester to show any voltage once the wire is placed ono the cap. I thought maybe the tester was bad, but when tested on another vehicle it lights up to show the fire as designed. So, I ask, why no fire once the wire is attached to the cap. Is it an engine ground issue? The 302 has a petronix distributor with the ignitor system and it only has about 100 miles on it. It doesn't appear burnt to indicate any failures inside the distributor, so I'm really scratching my head here. Can someone out there give me some suggestions on why I dont have the fire. I swapped coils, ignition switches, and wires. The only thing that hasnt been swapped is the distributor. The ground is good to the distributor. Any suggestions, I'm ALL ears....
Thanks
Brian

With your test light connected to a good ground and the probe touching the negative side of the coil, crank the engine and the light should flash. If it flashes and you still get no spark, the coil is bad. If it does not flash the problem is in the distributor.

I have not had a Pertronix Distributor fail, but I had one of their kits that replaces the points fail. It worked good for about a year. I had bypassed the resistor wire and ran a 12v source to the Pertronix and the coil. After a while it burned out the coil and caused the Pertronix to fail., or it burned out the Pertronix and caused the coil to fail. Either way I had a bad Petronix and a bad coil. Then I ran the 12v source to the Pertronix and the resitor wire to the coil and never had a problem again. I have seen them wired up to the resistor most of the time though.

You can buy just the module. Just be sure to wire it as per instructions and you might want to get their coil also.

Hi Brian,
Have you tested the primary side by simply pulling the coil wire from the cap and after inserting a paperclip in the socket hold it near a ground, while someone cranks the engine to test for spark?
Any signs of furry creatures being in the car over the winter?
Perhaps a know good spare dizzy with points will help. I have heard of the Pertronix sparkie's failing, but, although I keep an extra in the glove box, I have run the same unit for 8 years, or so.
Good Luck!

No chance of any furry creatures. lol This is the first Pertronix distributor I've had. Mostly have used mallory or MSD. I'm thinking maybe i just made the wrong choice. I originally thought maybe it was a resistor wire and wasn't getting proper voltage to make the ignitor fire. Need a minimum of 8v at the coil, and i'm getting 12, so no failure in the resistor wire. i hate to be just a parts swapper, but I think the distributor is were my problem is. I remounted the grounds within the engine compartment to eliminate them and still have the same problem. Does anyone have a suggestion of distributor/igntion system brands. Need something to look as good as it works. The car and engine compartment are amazing and have gotten us several trophies in just one year. I'll let everyone know once i try a new distributor, but in the meantime, keep the suggestions coming. You guys have been great! Once i figure how to upload some photos, i will. Thanks!!

Hi Brian,

Like you I hate to keep throwing money at something to fix it. Do you still have your OEM dizzy? There might be a way to test the Pertronix. Have you contacted their support team? The important things I've learned about these Pertronix units, is they usually require a full 12Vs and will burn out if the ignition is left on without a start. It's possible the inside unit has been damaged in some way. I know if I wre in yyour position, I would borrow or use my OEM dizzy and re-load. Also, contact Pertronix support. The make a great product. Like I stated, if installed correctly can last a long time.
OK. To load pics, scroll down to the "manage attachments". Select and select the browse button, find you pics, select the "open" to load. Close the browser window. However, there are "size" restrictions.
Keep us posted.

Thanks!! It was driven to a show by my wife and parked for about 6 hours the last time we had it running. It may have very well been left in the "on" position, it's hard to tell. I dont have another dizzy, so trying to locate one to borrow just to check. Pertronix was contacted and they forwarded me a load of literature for testing. I did everything they advised me to try and still nothing. They suggested the ignitor may have failed. They also suggested the same, try another dizzy. They seemed concerned and they gave me the impression that they stand behind their products. Sooner or later we'll get this fixed....
Thanks for the advice on loading images and I'll try to post some up. I will also keep posting if we finally get this figured out.

Hi Brian,

What model Pertronix are you running? The reason I ask, is I see you are in DE. I have an extra Pertronix, you can try. If you are getting no spark at the plug, then more than likely it's the sparkie. Have you tried re-installing your points?
