66 4 speed Coupe - Installing Hurst Shifter

Yep, pulls right off, however, is there any significant value in the 390 style toploader? Or are they pretty common? Was wondering if it would be worth more to sell it intact and get correct style unit to replace it. Just a thought. Plus, if your going to pull the tailshaft, you still really should address the input shaft problem. If the shifter is already off, dropping the trans is no more than 1 1/2 to 2 hour job. If your considering spending $275-$375 your halfway to a good toploader anyway. But the question I can't answer is whether the one you have is valuable to anyone, or would it be just as simple and worthwhile to convert the one you have.

The only thing unique about the 390 Toploaders is the shifter position and the shorter input snout, otherwise it's the same unit as the small block's got. Actually it's the short snout that makes buying these somewhat hazardous to the uninformed.

I finally got the correct part, thanks to everyone on stangnet and David Kee. The Hurst shifter feels great and it works in R, 1 and 2. I wasn't able to take it out for a ride cause of the weather here.

I'll take a look at the input shaft sometime soon, but not today. Thanks for all your help and info about this car. I'm looking forward to the next upgrade, but I think I better get a heater in the garage first . My hands are still thawing out.

Just don't put off addressing the input shaft/pilot bearing shortfall, or your next project will be replacing or rebuilding the transmission. I've "been there-done that" with two of em. That was 20+ years ago with my big block Stang.
