67 Autometer project completed

I did a little autometer gauge project in my spare time. I used 3 3/8 speedo and tach and 2 1/16 fuel, oil, water. The small gauges were very straightforward and nothing custom was needed. For the speedo and tach I made a support out of 3/32 ABS plastic that I bought off ebay. Obviously a 5 inch tach/speedo is ideal but I got a smoking deal on the 3 3/8 gauges. And for a 250$ total investment I couldn't be any happier.

Have you got an step-by-step photos?

I've got a JME cluster, but it's in camera case and I want to swap over to a brushed cluster. JME said I could either buy their aluminum bezel, for $800, or send my gauges back and pay another big fee. Wasn't too excited about either of those prospects...

That looks pretty damn nice. Good work. Have you installed it in your car yet?

I still like that mini tach that goes in place of the center pod for the clock option on 67-68. If I had a 67 or 68 thats what I would get. Unfortunately thats not an option for my 65. I am kind of partial to the long "falcon" style speedo on mine, so I just rebuilt it with all new components.

Sorry no step by step pictures. It is fairly straightforward though. If you are using 5 inch tach/speedo it is much more involved though, as major cutting of the bezel is needed (this is why the JME bezel is nice). And no it is not installed yet, I am seperated from the car at the moment. It should be installed in a few weeks

66 Runt- Beautiful car. What Hurst handle is that you are using with your t5? I have the stock appearing handle and I do not feel it matches the rest of my interior.

And here it is all wired up (minus the light bulb for the speedo) . Not too bad for a 20 yr old eh? I decided to not use the original steel suppport meaning the wiper switch will be epoxied in and the turn signal indicator lights will be custom mounted using some small cardboard tubes. The wiring was pretty simple, was time consuming though and the cheapo radioshack pin connector was a PITA

Markus, thanks! I'm assuming that is the ABS gauge support I've seen listed elsewhere? I plan on reusing as much of the JME stuff as possible, was just wondering how much hacking and slashing I had to do to make it all fit!

Hi,

the gauge support is from mustangs unlimited.

It is listed for two 3 3/8 inch gauges but it is for two 5 inch. And yes, the mods on the new gauge cluster is a pain
The 5 inch instruments fit perfectly, but the little holes are made for the 2 1/16 instruments. So i catch my dremel and cut bigger holes in the support to fit the 2 5/8 instruments.
I cut up the bulky instruments bezels to come closer to the front of the gauge cluster.

I can't remember the number for sure, but I *think* it's this one:

It sits about 1" too far forward in the '66 after moving the engine back 5/8". I'm adding an adapter block that will tilt it back slightly, so that it's ergonomically correct.
