67 Stang Radio Question

I'm working on a 67 FB project and I'm to the point where I need to do something about the radio and speakers. I would like to install an in-dash stereo/CD player and was wondering if anyone has any ideas on installing this type of radio in the 67? I'm considering modifying the bezel to fit a new stereo but would like some advise before moving forward.

Also, what are some options for rear speakers in the 67 FB?

Console or no console? Plain bezels are cheap and easy to modify for a modern radio, and it looks good when done. Console radio plates are rarer than hen's teeth and major $$$ so I don't think I'd cut one of those, but it does look good as well. You need to grind material off of the back of the bezel to fit a modern radio, but it's very simple.

Thanks for the feedback I have the original complete console but don't plan on installing it right now because this car is going to be driving by my son and I didn't want the console to be damaged. I'm just looking for an easy way to install a modern stereo.

It's not that hard to make the cut out for a modern radio in the bezel. That was one of the first things I did. I think I just used a dremel with a cutting disk and initially cut the opening a little small. Then I used a grinder attachment and would grind away a little, test fit, grind away a little more, test fit, grind, test, grind, etc . . . And I don't recall having to do any grinding on the back, just making the hole the correct size.

As far as if you should do it or not (coincidently, I think that was my very first post on stangnet), it's your car. Do what you want. You're the one who has to live with it. If it makes you feel better, they're making more & more things available reproduction; eventually they'll come out with a repro radio panel for the console.

And for rear speakers, I just mounted some 6 x 9's in the package try and mounted some simple boxes to the underside of the package tray directly below them. Nothing fancy, but it's better than stock. I did have to drill a few holes through the metal part of the package tray for the screws so I could mount everything, but it's really not that big of a deal.

Layout and drill 4 corner holes in the stock bezel then connect them with a hacksaw blade, the metal is very soft and will cut easily, then file to fit the stereo mounting sleeve. This worked for me

The radio you buy should be what they call a "DIN" mount. In the box there will most likely be a paper template you can use for laying out the opening on the bezel. I bought a new (repro) bezel for mine when I installed the radio. As others have said, a Dremel works great.

Here's a shot of mine installed:

I used the kick-panels already set up for speakers in the front. For the rear, I just got some gray carpeted 6x9 speaker boxes and sit them in the fold down area.

Man, I love the look, but I don't think I can bring myself to cut up the face plate in my 68 center console to fit a DIN radio. Just too damn hard to find. And if you do find them, you will spend big $$.

It's a Sanyo. Not top of the line, but it's pretty decent. It plays CD's and the face plate folds down and there's a slot for cassettes as well. It's about 3 or 4 years old, though. I'm probably going to have to get another stereo some time soon. I think my biggest requirements are it's going to have to be silver (to match the brushed aluminum) with green buttons (to match the dash lights).

Man, I love the look, but I don't think I can bring myself to cut up the face plate in my 68 center console to fit a DIN radio. Just too damn hard to find. And if you do find them, you will spend big $$.

Like I said, they're making more & more things reproduction. Hell, even the overhead consoles are repro now (a couple years after I did a TON of searching and finally bought a used one ). I wouldn't be suprised if they had all the console parts available within the next couple of years.

Did you have to cut the dash metal any to make it fit? I thought about doing that before I went ahead and cut up my console, but I didn't think it would fit w/o cutting the dash.

You can always hide it in the glove box. Mine is done this way and it preserves the stock appearance and serves the extra purpose of keeping the head unit low-profile... thieves don't see it, they certainly don't expect it's there in our cars. Just control it with the remote they all come with now. If the battery on the thing has a decent charge you can control it straight through the closed glove box door.

I did not have to cut any dash metal.

Also I drilled a small hole (about the thickness of a paperclip) in the center plastic cover so I can use the remote.

Just to add to the reference file, here's one I did for a '67 w/o console. It's a cut out reproduction radio bezel. I made a bracket that supports the back by bolting between the back face of the head unit and the dash structure.

Here's a pic of my install of a modern CD player in my '67 FB. The console had already been cut so I didnt worry about cutting a original console. Took some modifying but I'm happy with the final result. Mine has a deluxe interior so went for the silver faced stereo

Hey.... if anyone is still in the process of putting in a stereo.. I got some parts to sell. I'm eliminating a stereo completely from my car. So I got the front kick panels with the 5" speakers.... and I'd swap my rear hatch door (fastback) that has the holes cut for 6 x 9's for an uncut version. I've got a 67' fastback.... let me know. In fact.. i'd give for free the kick panels if someone just covers the shipping to swap hatch doors.
