67 stang with 351w

Ok first off i want to say hello to all. I just recently purchased my first mustang. Its a 67 coupe with a 351w and c4 tranny. As far as i know the en gine is pretty much stock with maybe an aftermarket intake manifold. The tranny has been rebuilt and works good. Its my daily driver but im looking for more hp and tq. Now im not what you would call an experienced mechanic but i know your basics when it comes to an engine. I'm on a budget of about 4 grand and would like to have some work done to the motor but dont really know where to start. hoping some people can give me some input. any replys are much appreciated. oh and its going to be strictly street. looking for high end power but able to run pump gas. still be a daily driver. thanks. :nice:

4k would buy you a nice top end.

In about two weeks I'm going to install TFS Twisted Wedge heads, and a new cam on my 351w in my 68.
Had I not got a good deal on the heads I probably would have went for a matched kit like Edelbrock's Performer RPM heads/cam/intake kit. On a windsor it made around 418 HP according to their catalog. That's easy power without all the trouble of trying to figure out how to match components from different manufacturers like I'm doing. Everything is all made to work with everything else, no guesswork.

I forgot, with you having an auto, I would plan on spending money on a new torque converter to match what engine combo you are going to go with. Also consider a set of gears.

Ok, well i haven't been on in a couple weeks and during my time away i've been doing lots of reading and learning instead of just annoying you guys with unneccesary questions i could learn by just looking it up. lol. anyways.

After some thinking ive decided to take my 351w project to the next level and do a full conversion from carb to a efi system, new heads/cam and lift. My goal is still to have as much hp and tq as possible but still use as a daily driver on pump gas. And please bare with me on this i'm a newbie into the world of mechanics and high perfomance engines :notnice: I'm hoping the feedback i get with this will help me piece this engine together. The parts i would like to use right now are

Edelbrock's Pro-Flo®2 Multi-Point EFI System.

PROCOMP PRO SERIES ALUMINUM HEADS
210CC runner size, 60cc combustion chambers. 2.02 1.60 valve size.

There are so many cams to choose from i dont know where to start there, which one would be the best for what im going after? i'm leaning toward a hydraulic flat tappet cam, maybe comp cam, not sure. Any input on this is much appreciated as with everything else.

Also if you can think of any "must"-do's that should be included in this re- build please feel free to throw it out there. I'm not stuck on any one thing.

Thanks. :nice:

procomp heads are hit and miss, made in China junk. pro-flo may not fit under the hood also isn't the best efi system out there, look into the mass-flo efi, powerjection 1 or 3 or ez-efi (all self tuning)Comp cams xe series will be good, stay around 224. @0.50 duration.

wow, iv'e read some goods things about them, it sucks not having experience because i'm so young and didn't grow up in a family with auto mechanics or any kind of shop at that. But i've always been interested in working on something vehicle related and always dreamed of owning a classic car and i finally came across a good deal and took up the oppurtunity. I've had the car for about a month now and have been happy with everything for the most part. These are the first pics iv'e posted online so far.

Well i think the pro flo efi is way pricey also. I was looking at mass flo efi lastnight but didn't read any reviews or anything on it but it looked good for the price, does anyone have any experience with the system? how was it on performance?

Ford 351W EFI System [FORD351W] - $2,994.99 : Mass-Flo EFI, Inc., Mass Air Fuel Injection Systems!

Also im willing to spend up to about 700.00 for heads i'm hoping i can get some high quality parts for around that price. any suggestions from experience? again it's strictly a street machine, daily driven.

Thanks

sweet car man! looks awesome! I have always liked the older stangs. I hope to pick up a 65 coupe someday.

Well the way i see it now is, you already have the 393, so now all you need is the turbo kit. :nice: just a suggestion. And i've read a little about stroker kits but don't have any clue how i would build an engine. Labor is going to kill me in this current project, i don't have the skill or tools to do most of the things i want to change. Does anyone knows an average cost for a mechanic to install heads/cam? Parts not included i would supply them.

Wow! Man i appreciate you posting that thread for me to see, actually has me convinced they are junk. So im now stuck with trick flow or dart heads. What do you think would be the best intake port/chamber volume/intake and exhaust valves for my engine and what i'm going after. Also would 36# injectors be to big for my application, i'm interested in the Professional Products Powerinjection 2 efi system but i can only find it in 24# and 36#. I think 24's are too small.

Before you do anything else you need to find out what pistons you have in the motor now and what the compression ratio is. That's going to be key in picking a cam and heads (chamber size). Also, you can stick with a carb setup and still enjoy EFI performance and reliability, the key here is cam choice (you're looking for a wide LSA EFI grind) a good electronic ignition (Ford's Duraspark is fine, as is a Pertronix unit in the points distributor) Top it off with a high rise dual plane aluminum intake and a 600-700 cfm vacuum secondary carb (Holley's 570 or 670 Street Avenger is what I'd use, with the smaller of the two for daily driving) Stick with this recipe and you'll have a motor that starts and idles without a choke (even in the coldest weather you have in Richmond), that gets good mileage and will burn the tires down anytime you choose to do so.

Short of using a bore scope, you're going to have to pull at least one head to find out. Unless you have access to specs on the pistons in it now. You'll need to measure the depth of any dish there and the distance to the top of the deck at TDC
