I picked up a project car, 70 fastback, this week and am in the process of ordering the sheet metal for it. The car needs a new decklid, LH quarter cap and taillight panel for sure as well as numerous other things. I really like the 70 front end however I prefer the 69 style tail lights mainly when they are shaved like blackened was from year one. Since the cars are almost identical I was thinking it would be possible to swap in a 69 tail light panel instead of the 70. Doesn't bother me that its not factory, I couldn't care less. Just wondering if I'm looking at loads of custom fabbing, which i've done, or is it pretty simple. Reason i ask is i don't have a 69 to compare it to, so I really have no idea other then pictures. I'd appreciate the help

Wondering if you ever found out any information on this? I am thinking about doing the same on my 70'. I already have a 69' Front end on mine.

I'm the complete opposite . . .

Bad92,
As the owner of a '70, there's one thing, and one thing only, that I'd like from the '69: the headlights, specifically the dual front lights. I think that makes, say, the '69 Mach 1 a beautiful thing. Except for those narrow tail lights. I love the deep, recessed, aircraft/spaceship exhaust style taillights on the '70. I think that was what they were going for in the design. I would go so far as to say that they were the best looking taillights on any Mustang ever made. Otherwise, the '70 models have a few improvements over the '69.
You can go black honeycomb on the taillight panel on the '70, that still looks good, but have you ever looked at those taillights at night? If you're set on it, it's your car, and more power to you, but those '70 lights are nice.

You can put the 69-70 tail panel om the opposite year with little modification. Of course, you better really want it, this is the sort of thing that kills re-sale value. Everybody says they'll never sell, but…

They were both nice.

I would not do it. It will look like some type of half ass repair and just look wrong.

I have a Shelby panel on my '70 and can't wait to return it back to the original panel. I don't really care about what's original so if you really prefer the '69 panel then go for it. But, I think the '70 panel with the recessed lights is the best Mustang rear there is!

If you want to fit the 69 tailight panel to the 70 the 1/4 endcaps from a 69 fastback must be used as the 70 fastback endcaps are different.javed
