80mm MAF too big?

I'm looking to install a track heat intake or similar, 70mm TB, 30# injectors, twisted wedge heads and all the other goodies soon and was wondering how large of a MAF I should buy. Is 80mm overkill for the MAF? The intake opening is 75mm I believe so would it be restrictive to go from 80mm MAF to 70mm in the TB then 75mm for the intake or would I be fine?

I don't know if I'd use that strong of language. Pro-M, C&L, and some tuners will tell you that if you go too large with the mass air flow sensor, there may be resonance issues that lead to erratic idle quality. Lidio Iacobelli of Alternative Auto Performance will recommend nothing larger than a 70mm id MAF for a stock 5.0 because of the resonance issue and resultant difficulties with tuning. Some of the resonance problems may be dampened by covering the sensor...and many of us have done that with literally night and day differences in idle.

If you have a modified engine, it may be wise not to go too large with the MAF or the TB as the likely restriction in the system is not there, but the heads themselves. Velocity of gas flow appears to be an important factor with the EFI engines. Using too large of MAF, TB, or intake slows the velocity and may create low RPM tuning issues, regardless of peak HP/torque numbers that may be achieved on the dyno at WOT. 99% of the time the engine is not running at WOT and you aren't going to miss the 2-3HP difference. I can barely feel 20HP difference.

I didn't come up with this information off the top of my head. Talk to the pros for confirmation.
