85' 5.0 C.F.I. ???

FLA5.0 - thanks for the description -- "Original pre-85 flat-tappet blocks can be made to work with OE-style roller tappets by overboring the lifter bosses and press-fitting tall bronze bushings that extend the bores to accept the longer roller tappets"

Like I said, it's usually more practical to just start with a roller block, or use the aftermarket linked lifters.

Maybe we can get some other guys to chime in on this one. I've been under the impression that one thing that makes a 5.0L HO an "HO" is the presence of the roller cam. In other words, if it's a 5.0L and not a roller, then it's not an HO. But I could be incorrect about that.

All 79-84 Carb'd Mustang V-8's...flat tappet/hyd.
82 -84 Mustang H.O. man. trans...flat tappet/hyd.
84-85 CFI Mustang V-8's...flat tappet/hyd.
85 Mustang H.O. 4 bbl V-8 w/man trans....roller cam
All 5-liter truck V-8's through 91...flat tappet/hyd.

Only for three years were H.O.'s non-roller...I looked it up after I told another poster a lie that all H.O.'s were roller-cammed.

Maybe just for information mongers, you (above post) never mentioned that in 80 and 81 they did not make a 302 in those years. Those early non roller HO's are only max 157 hp I think too. I just add this for the people who love to know all they can about these great cars......foxes anyway.

You're correct, in 80, 81, 82 the only available V-8 engine was a 115 horse 4.2, (255ci). All the info I have on this engine is that it wasn't worth owning. :D

FLA5.0 - gee, your definition of a lie is about the tightest I've ever seen. You quoted what I said -- "I've been under the impression that one thing that makes a 5.0L HO an "HO" is the presence of the roller cam. In other words, if it's a 5.0L and not a roller, then it's not an HO. But I could be incorrect about that." I clearly was sharing my current understanding, and allowed that I might be mistaken. If that seems like lieing to you - my apologies. Thanks for helping me learn something about it.

you are not wrong about the trucks but i am just adding to your facts. the 87-91's or 92's(whenever the changed the front end looks). but not to sure, have roller ready blocks but not equipped with a roller cam. i know this because i have a 90 model truck block and heads i am using now and the lifter valley as drilled and tapped for the spider bars.

Dude, you totally misunderstood what I said...I said that I lied to another poster when I told him that all H.O. motors were rollers. Meaning that I had given someone inaccurate info and did not want to repeat the mistake, therefore I looked it up to be sure. I would not call you or anybody else a liar on the site...even if I disagreed with them. Besides I've been following your replies through some of the different threads and you are clearly knowledgable about the 5.0 engine and Mustangs in general. You have answered several questions that I simply could not! My apologies for the misunderstanding.
