86 302 questions

i'm normally a 94-95 visitor, but i decided to come to this side of the realm, because you guys would most likely be more knowledgeable.

theres a 1986 capri 302 posted on craigslist in the area, best offer. not sure what to offer him.

the pistons would have to be notched for any kind of aftermarket heads for the 86 302s correct?


what do you think this motors worth? doesn't have mileage listed, said motor ran 3 years ago. doesn't have a view from the front, so i don't know if its got the accesories, it doesn't have a flywheel, its got shorties, can't tell if they were stock or not, picture shows lower intake, not sure about upper.

really, i'm just looking for a block, but this guys had this posted for like 6 months now, and a few postings before this one, i think he had it listed at 350.

my advice is to keep shopping.

the 86 pistons suck, so you will have to notch them first, and that will either set you back a bunch to either have someone do it or for the tool/your time. i wouldnt really offer more than $100 if your gonna do it at all.

+1. Its not worth buying the short block if you want to put aftermarket heads on it. Just keep looking, I'm sure you can find a 87+ block for just as much and you won't have to waste time, money and stress notching the pistons.

87+ block is the way to go.

Look in Lincoln Mark 7's and Explorer/mountaineers

yeah i was definitely thinking of explorer motors, since they come with the gt40s.

but i figured since they 86 need the pistons notched, i may be able to bring this up to the guy to talk him down more.


2 86 guys telling me not to go 86 block, haha, think i'll definitely listen to that then.

so i'll have to check the local scrap yards and see if i can get a 302 block out of there. i have 206k on my motor now, and while its running pretty decent, its still not 100%. so i plan on building another motor while i drive this one, since this is my only car. then a weekend just transfer everything i can over.
